Byobuiwa Koen is an area located in Sonogi Village, Nara Prefecture, offering a spectacular view of the Byobuiwa rock formation at an altitude of 940m. Situated to the west of Mt. Kabuto, the name 'Byobuiwa' (Folding Screen Rock) comes from its appearance, as the jagged peaks rise vertically like a traditional Japanese folding screen. The landscape stretches for 2km, forming a sharp, saw-toothed ridge with vertical cliffs approximately 200m high. These cliffs are characterized by columnar jointing, a natural geological structure that creates a unique and magnificent aesthetic.
Due to its extraordinary and unique geological appearance, Byobuiwa was designated as a National Natural Monument of Japan in December 1934. It has been cherished and protected as a vital piece of local natural heritage for many years, serving as a symbol of the historical and geological value of the region.
The primary attraction is the towering vertical cliffs of columnar jointing. The sight of the 200m high cliffs stretching across a 2km span is a breathtaking experience for all visitors. The park area at the foot of the cliffs allows you to enjoy diverse flora throughout the year. In spring, the contrast between the white mountain cherry blossoms and the dark rock walls is stunning. Additionally, during certain seasons, the blooming of Mitsuba Tsutsuji (Azalea) adds vibrant colors to the landscape.

Autumn (October to November) is also a popular time to visit, as the surrounding landscape is painted with vibrant autumn foliage, creating a beautiful contrast with the rock walls. There are several facilities nearby to help you fully enjoy the nature of Sonogi Village. For instance, the Sonogi Kogen Farm Garden is located within a designated quasi-national park. Additionally, nearby hot spring facilities such as 'Sonogi Kogen Onsen Ogame-no-yu' are perfect for a relaxing soak after your hike or walk.
