Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is located on Mt. Komatsu at an altitude of 430m in Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture. It is the only surviving mountain-style castle in Japan and is celebrated as one of the 'Japan's Top 100 Castles.' The castle tower, double turrets, and parts of the stone walls constructed during the Edo period are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The castle is most famous for its mystical appearance; under specific weather conditions, the castle tower appears to float above a sea of clouds, earning it the nickname 'Castle in the Sky.' Additionally, visitors can enjoy meeting the castle's charming resident, a cat named 'Sanju-ro,' who serves as the unofficial 'Cat Lord' of the castle.
Historically, this castle served as a 'Tsume no Shiro' (a castle used for military readiness). During the Edo period, because mountain castles were difficult to manage for daily administration, the lord's official business was conducted in the castle town at the foot of the mountain. Although the castle fell into disrepair following the abolition of the feudal system in the Meiji era, local passion led to its restoration in the early Showa era. Following the 'Great Showa Restoration' in the 1950s, the site was preserved as a precious historical monument. The castle's striking visual beauty and historical significance were further highlighted when it was used as a filming location for the opening sequence of the NHK Taiga Drama 'Sanada Maru.'
The greatest attraction is the original castle tower and double turrets. The architectural beauty of the Edo-period design is a testament to its value as an Important Cultural Property. For a truly magical experience, visitors can view the castle from the Sea of Clouds Observatory when weather conditions are perfect. Another unique charm is the presence of the 'Cat Lord' Sanju-ro, who welcomes guests with a friendly presence. Walking around the castle grounds, you can feel the history through the surviving stone walls, gates, and earthen walls that define the structure of a traditional Japanese mountain castle.
The best time to witness the 'sea of clouds' is during the early morning from late September to early April, particularly between late October and early December. Ideal conditions include a clear sky with no wind, and a significant temperature difference between the previous day and the morning of the visit. For the best views, plan to be at the site between dawn and 8:00 AM. Please note that there may be snow accumulation from December to February, so please check weather conditions and prepare for cold temperatures.
Exploring the castle on foot offers a deep connection to Japanese castle culture. The hike from the castle town to the main keep (Honmaru) is approximately 1,500m and takes about one hour. This allows visitors to trace the footsteps of history while enjoying the natural surroundings. The view from the Sea of Clouds Observatory is a once-in-a-lifetime experience where nature and history seamlessly blend.
At the foot of the castle, you can find the remains of the former castle town where the lord's palace and samurai residences once stood. Today, the area features landmarks like Okayama Prefectural Takahashi High School, offering a glimpse into the historical landscape. The Sea of Clouds Observatory is located in a different area from the castle itself and can be accessed via car or a sightseeing shuttle taxi.
The path to the castle is steep and resembles a mountain trail. It takes about one hour to walk from the base to the main keep, so sturdy walking shoes and appropriate clothing are essential. Be prepared for changing weather and temperature drops.
