Bisha no Hana is a scenic cape located in Yoshimu, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, marking the westernmost tip of Honshu island. Situated at 34°6'38"N and 130°51'37"E, it serves as a significant geographic boundary. The cape features an observation plaza developed at an altitude of 120 meters, offering an unobstructed, panoramic view of the vast Sea of Japan.
This area holds historical significance as the edge of Honshu. It is a key destination for the "Honshu Four Ends Completion Rally," a journey to visit the four extreme points of the main island. The area is also linked to local history, with nearby sites such as shrines dedicated to figures like Nakayama Tadamitsu from the late Edo period. The tradition of documenting one's arrival at the westernmost tip of Honshu is a cherished part of the local culture, drawing travelers who wish to hold physical proof of their journey.
The primary highlight is the observation plaza located on a 120-meter high plateau. From here, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the Sea of Japan and the nearby Futa-i Island, located approximately 5km to the west. It is renowned as the location where the latest sunset on the Honshu mainland can be observed, offering a unique spectacle as the colors of the sky shift continuously. While a stone monument marks the exact westernmost point, access to the monument itself may be restricted for management purposes.
You can visit throughout the year, but the sunset hours are highly recommended. To witness the spectacular sun dipping into the Sea of Japan, it is essential to time your visit according to the local sunset time. Because the scenery changes dramatically as the sun sets, you can experience different moods and colors depending on the hour.
Access to the observation plaza is via a well-maintained walking path, approximately 200 meters from the parking area. You can enjoy a peaceful stroll in a natural environment while taking in the views. Visitors can also leave a lasting record of their journey by obtaining a "Westernmost Honshu Arrival Certificate." These certificates can be purchased for 100 JPY at various tourist information centers, such as those at JR Shimonoseki Station, Shin-Shimonoseki Station, or the local tourism terminal.
The surrounding Yoshimu area is rich in natural beauty. Nearby, you can find beautiful beaches with shallow waters, campsites, and areas suitable for marine sports. The region is also dotted with historical shrines and natural parks, allowing travelers to explore both the natural landscapes and local history.
