Beppu Tower is a 100-meter tall observation tower located in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. Built in 1957, it is historically significant as the third tallest tower constructed in Japan, following the Nagoya TV Tower and Tsutenkaku. In 2007, it was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, cementing its status as a beloved symbol of Beppu. Between 2022 and 2023, the tower underwent a major renovation, which included replacing the observation deck glass, adding new LED lighting, and restoring the color of the steel structures to preserve its original charm while embracing modern technology.
The tower was originally conceived as the centerpiece for the 1957 Beppu Hot Spring Tourism Grand Exhibition. While it was intended to serve as a radio tower during its construction, its history has seen various challenges, including the expiration of advertising neon sign contracts and periods of management crisis. However, in 2021, the tower entered a new era after being acquired by Kaisei Josan Co., Ltd. (formerly Kaisei Tsusho Co., Ltd.). The recent large-scale renovation has successfully blended the restoration of its classic aesthetic with modern-day functionality, ensuring its place in the future of Beppu's skyline.

The highlight of the experience is the observation deck located 55 meters above the ground. From here, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view, allowing you to easily identify the surrounding topography and the layout of the city. At night, the tower comes alive with LED light-ups. The lighting displays are a major feature, with colors changing according to the season or specific events. For instance, the tower may be illuminated in specific colors like red, white, or green to commemorate certain people or special events.
The LED light-up displays run from sunset until 23:00. The themes and lighting effects vary by season, featuring displays such as the "WINTER Light-up" or "Autumn Color Light-up." Since special color schedules are often set for specific anniversaries or events, it is highly recommended to check the official website or local information before your visit. You can enjoy bright, clear landscapes during the day and a beautifully illuminated tower against the night sky after dark.

The primary experience is the panoramic viewing from the observation deck. Through the newly installed, high-quality glass, visitors can enjoy an unobstructed view of the Beppu cityscape and the vast expanse of Beppu Bay. Visiting in alignment with the light-up schedule allows you to witness the tower transformed into a colorful landmark against the night sky.
The tower is located in the Kitahama area of Beppu City. This area serves as a central hub for tourism, making it easy to explore the surrounding city streets and local amenities alongside your visit to the tower.
