The Beppu Ropeway is a scenic cable car system located at the foot of Mount Tsurumi in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. It transports visitors from the base to the mountain summit, providing an elevated perspective of the surrounding landscape. Once you reach the summit area, an observation deck allows you to enjoy a wide-angle view of the local topography and the breathtaking scenery of the region.
The ropeway serves as a key tourism resource for the Beppu area, designed to showcase the natural beauty of Mount Tmurumi. For many years, it has provided visitors with a way to experience the seamless integration of the region's natural environment and its iconic landscape.
From the gondola, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the mountain ridges and the sprawling cityscape of Beppu below. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons, offering different colors and textures depending on the time of year. After arriving at the summit, visitors can spend time exploring the observation areas and enjoying the fresh mountain air.
The landscape changes beautifully from March through December. Please note that operating hours and the time of the last gondola vary by season: the Summer Season (March 15 – November 14) and the Winter Season (November 15 – March 14). For any special night-time operations, it is highly recommended to check the official website in advance.
Taking the ropeway provides a unique way to experience the scenery from an altitude that is impossible to see from the ground. Once at the summit, visitors can enjoy light walking or observing the rich natural environment of the mountain.
The area surrounding the base of Mount Tsurumi is rich in nature and is located near various famous hot spring (onsen) facilities and tourist attractions within Beppu City.
Because temperatures at the summit tend to be significantly lower than at the base, please bring clothing appropriate for the season (such as a light jacket even in warmer months). For your safety and comfort, it is recommended to wear sturdy walking shoes suitable for uneven terrain.
