Benesse House Museum is a premier facility where the museum and hotel are integrated under the concept of "Coexistence of Nature, Architecture, and Art." Located on a hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, the museum is defined by the iconic architecture of Tadao Ando. The structure utilizes large openings to draw the island's natural scenery into the interior, creating a rare space where nature, architecture, and art interact intimately. Beyond the indoor exhibition spaces, artworks are scattered throughout the surrounding coastline and forests, allowing visitors to experience art alongside ever-changing landscapes as they walk through the site.
The facility focuses on site-specific works—artworks created in response to the natural environment of Naoshima or inspired by the architectural space itself. Artists have personally selected this location to engage in a dialogue with the landscape and architecture. Rather than being a simple exhibition space, the museum serves as a cultural hub where architecture, nature, and art form a single, unified entity, playing a central role in the Benesse Art Site Naoshima project.
The collection spans a wide variety of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and installations. Renowned artists such as Bruce Nauman, Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquille, Frank Stella, Shinro Ohtake, Tatsuo Miyajima, and Hiroshi Sugimoto have their works showcased within Tadao Ando's architectural spaces. Additionally, permanent outdoor installations, such as Yayoi Kusama's "Pumpkin" and Shinro Ohtake's "Shipyard Works," are integrated with the scenery of the Seto Inland Sea, offering an immersive art experience in the open air.
The museum is open year-round and presents a different face with each season. During the bright daylight hours, visitors can enjoy the interplay of natural light streaming through the openings, the deep blue of the Seto Inland Sea, and the geometric beauty of the architecture. Because the museum remains open until 21:00, visiting at night offers a special opportunity to experience the illuminated architecture and the profound silence of the art in a nocturnal setting. The surrounding forests and coastlines change with the seasons, ensuring a fresh sense of harmony with nature every time you visit.
Inside the museum, staff-led gallery tours are held daily from 16:00 to 16:45 (free of charge). These programs provide a valuable opportunity to deepen your understanding of the artworks through stories regarding their creation. On the second floor, the Museum Shop offers art-related goods and books, allowing you to take a piece of Naoshima's culture home with you. The greatest experience is the holistic sensation of being immersed in a space where nature, architecture, and art are one.
Benesse House is an integrated complex that includes various accommodation wings such as "Oval," "Park," and "Beach." For example, the "Oval" wing, accessible via monorail, is situated on a hill to maximize the views of the Seto Inland Sea. The "Beach" area is closer to the coastline, while the "Park" area features restaurants and cafes, each offering a different way to experience the relationship between nature and art. You can enjoy a long-term, immersive stay alongside the beautiful scenery of the Kotanji district in southern Naoshima.
To protect the artworks and maintain a quiet environment, please do not touch the pieces (except for specific interactive works). Video recording and sketching are prohibited. While photography for personal use is permitted, please refrain from using images for printed publications. Large luggage (such as suitcases or tripods) must be left at the reception. Pets are not allowed inside. The entire premises is non-smoking. The use of drones or unmanned aircraft is strictly prohibited for safety and preservation.
