Banko no Sakura is a beautiful spot for viewing Beni-shidazakura (deep-colored weeping cherry blossoms) in Ogawa Village, Nagano Prefecture. Located at an altitude of approximately 760m, the cherry blossoms are characterized by their intense, rich coloration, which stands out beautifully against the surrounding natural landscape. The site is situated near the ruins of the Taterigogu-dome Banjo (a historical checkpoint), adding a sense of historical depth to the seasonal beauty of the area.
The area is steeped in history, being near the site of the historical Tateriguchi Tome Banjo. The cherry blossoms here are deeply connected to the local heritage. Nearby, the 'Taya no Sakura'—an Edohigan cherry tree designated as a village natural monument in 1979—boasts a height of 15 meters and a history spanning 350 years. Banko no Sakura is cherished as a significant seasonal symbol within this rich cultural and historical context.
The most striking feature is the intense, deep color of the Beni-shidazakura blossoms. Compared to standard cherry blossoms, the color is much more vivid, providing a powerful visual impact. Because it is located at a high altitude, the view integrates seamlessly with the surrounding mountains and topography. During the spring, photographers flock to the area to capture the stunning contrast between the deep blue sky and the vibrant pink blossoms.
The best time to visit is in April. To fully experience the intense colors of the blossoms, it is essential to time your visit with the peak blooming period. For the best visual experience, daytime offers a clear contrast between the blue sky and the flowers. However, visiting during the soft light of early morning or late afternoon is highly recommended, as the gentle light brings out the delicate textures and the profound depth of the blossom colors.
The primary activity here is landscape photography. The unique composition of the cherry blossoms set against the backdrop of the surrounding mountain ranges offers a one-of-a-kind view. Visitors can also enjoy peaceful strolls through nature, taking time to quietly observe the changing seasons and the serene atmosphere of the mountains.
Ogawa Village is widely known as a 'Village of Cherry Blossoms.' Besides Banko no Sakura, the area is dotted with other varieties such as the 'Taya no Sakura' and 'Nitanda no Sakura.' The Ogawa Alps Line provides a scenic route for driving or touring, offering beautiful views of the lush, natural landscape throughout the region.
