Chihiro Art Museum Azumino, located in Matsukawa Village, Nagano Prefecture, is the world's first museum dedicated to the art of picture books. The architecture is designed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment of Azumino, where the sight of the Northern Alps' lingering snow and fresh greenery creates a sense of harmony. The museum showcases the works of Chihiro Kitagawa alongside a precious collection of original works by picture book artists from across the globe. It is a sanctuary where nature, architecture, and the world of picture books converge to provide a deeply peaceful experience.
The museum was established to preserve the works of the artist Chihiro Kitagawa and to pass her spirit down to future generations. The exhibits are more than just paintings; they serve as vital cultural records of the history of the picture book medium. The collection includes original drawings from a diverse range of artists from Asia, Europe, and America, making the museum a significant cultural hub for understanding the diversity of expression in picture book art.
The museum features several exhibition rooms organized by theme. Key areas include "Chihiro's Work," which focuses on her representative original drawings; "Chihiro's Life," which traces her journey chronologically; and "World Picture Book Artists," showcasing works from around the world. Visitors can also explore historical materials regarding the evolution of picture books and enjoy special exhibitions that change with the seasons. Additionally, the facility offers a "Picture Book Room" where you can browse approximately 3,000 books, and a "Children's Room" designed to foster creativity, making it an engaging destination for all ages.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring, the contrast between the Northern Alps' snow and the fresh greenery is striking, while early summer brings a lush, vibrant landscape. Standard opening hours are 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, please note that during the Golden Week period (April 25 – May 6) and the summer season (July 18 – August 31), the opening time may change to 9:00 AM. We recommend visiting during these times to enjoy the shifting seasonal displays and the tranquil atmosphere.
Beyond viewing the exhibits, you can immerse yourself in literature at the "Picture Book Room." The on-site cafe offers light meals and sweets made with local ingredients, as well as herbal teas, allowing you to linger over the art while gazing at the Northern Alps. The museum shop provides a variety of unique goods inspired by the artworks. Depending on the season, the museum may also host workshops related to the creation of picture books.
The museum is situated in a scenic area of Azumino. The nearby Azumino Park is an excellent spot for a relaxing stroll. For access, most visitors take a taxi from Shinano-Matsukawa Station or use a rental bicycle. You can also use seasonal bus services, such as the Azumino Enjoy Bus or the Shinano-Omachi Loop Bus, to visit the museum in conjunction with other local sightseeing spots.
