Guide
Agatsuma Gorge is a breathtaking natural landscape stretching approximately 2.5 km along the Agatsuma River, spanning from Agatsuma Town to Nagaohara Town in Gunma Prefecture. As a nationally designated scenic spot known as 'Agatsuma-kyo,' its grand scale has earned it the nickname 'The Yabakei of Kanto.' The riverbanks are densely populated with maple, oak, and red pine trees, creating a landscape of shifting colors that change dramatically with every season. The dynamic interplay between the river's flow and the sculpted rock formations continues to captivate visitors.
The region has long been blessed by its unique geography. The landscape was formed by the erosion of Miocene-era volcanic rocks and tuff by the Agatsuma River, resulting in a diverse and complex terrain. The bends in the river, the rapids, deep pools, and the unique rock formations and waterfalls are masterpieces sculpted by nature over countless years. Historically, the beauty of this area was so highly regarded that it was famously described in the 'Jomo Karuta' poetry as 'Agatsuma-kyo, rivaling the beauty of Yabakei.' While it was once a difficult passage between east and west, it is now a highly accessible destination for nature lovers thanks to well-maintained roads and walking paths.

The greatest charm of Agatsuma Gorge lies in the colorful gradients of the foliage. In spring, the Mitsuba Tsutsuji (Azalea) blooms with reddish-purple flowers, while early summer brings a refreshing burst of bright green. The autumn foliage season is particularly spectacular, as maple trees turn vibrant shades of red and yellow, making the entire gorge appear as if it is glowing. A key highlight is the hiking trail leading from the gorge parking lot to the 'Shohorai' lookout point. The walk takes about 60 minutes one way, offering a stunning elevated view of the gorge. Visitors can enjoy the scenery from two perspectives: the intimate view near the river and the panoramic view from the high lookout.
Because the landscape changes so drastically, the best time to visit depends on your interests. Late April to May is perfect for seeing the pinkish-purple Mitsuba Tsutsuji blooms and the lush greenery of early summer. However, the most popular time is from mid-October to early November, when the autumn colors reach their peak intensity. Please note that the walking paths may be closed during the winter season, so plan your visit accordingly. For the best photographic opportunities, visiting during the bright daylight hours is recommended to see the clarity of the water and the vividness of the foliage.

Hiking is the primary activity here. You can walk along well-maintained paths while immersing yourself in the sounds and sights of the gorge. The 60-minute one-way trek is a perfect way to connect with nature and find tranquility. After your hike, you can visit local facilities such as 'Michi-no-Eki Agatsuma-kyo' to experience the local atmosphere and flavors. This combination of hiking and local exploration offers a refreshing escape from daily life.
The area around Agatsuma Gorge is dotted with other wonderful attractions. The nearby Shima Onsen area is a famous hot spring destination where you can enjoy traditional hot spring culture alongside the beautiful river scenery. Additionally, the 'Michi-no-Eki Agatsuma-kyo' provides access to local specialties and gourmet treats. Combining a nature walk with a visit to a nearby hot spring or local market allows for a much more fulfilling and relaxing travel itinerary.
For hiking, please wear comfortable walking shoes and practical clothing. While the paths are maintained, the terrain is natural, so watch your step. Depending on the season, it is wise to bring a light jacket or rain gear. To preserve this beautiful environment, please follow local etiquette: take all trash home with you and do not pick any plants. It is also important to check the latest information before visiting, as certain paths may be closed during the winter months.
