Ayabeyama Umekirin is a beautiful plum grove located on a high vantage point in Mitsu-cho, Tatsuno City, Hyogo Prefecture. Centered around Mt. Ayabe at an elevation of approximately 144.5 meters, the grove is filled with numerous plum trees that burst into color with red and white blossoms as spring arrives. From the grove, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Shinmaiko-hama coastline (a part of a National Park), the Ieshima Islands in the Seto Inland Sea, Shodoshima, Awaji Island, and even the distant islands of Shikoku. It is a unique destination where natural beauty and historical remains coexist.
This area is not just a scenic spot but also holds significant historical value. The site features more than 20 ancient burial mounds (kofun) believed to have been constructed between the 5th and 7th centuries, allowing visitors to feel the presence of ancient history. The history of this land, which has evolved alongside nature, is deeply rooted in the current landscape of the plum grove. Additionally, the surrounding area is home to facilities like the "World Plum Park," adding to the cultural depth of the region.
The greatest draw is the stunning contrast between the red and white plum blossoms in full bloom and the deep blue of the Seto Inland Sea below. During the peak season, the fragrance of the white plums engages both sight and scent, providing a true sensory experience of spring. Exploring the historical kofun (burial mounds) while walking through the grove is another unique way to experience the site. Furthermore, in recent years, the fields at the foot of the hill have been filled with bright yellow rapeseed (nanohana) flowers around the same time as the plum blossoms, creating a multi-colored landscape.
The plum blossoms typically begin to bloom in mid-February and reach full bloom from late February to early March. Visiting during this window ensures you see the most vibrant colors. The season is characterized by the refreshing scent of plum blossoms carried on the early spring breeze. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to clearly see the details of the islands and the coastline. The bright spring sunlight also makes the colors of the blossoms appear much more vivid.
The primary activity is a leisurely stroll through nature. You can enjoy walking through the plum blossoms while discovering ancient burial mounds. Depending on the timing, there may be local events or even sales of green plums (ao-ume). It is a place to connect with local culture and history through nature. Please note that some paths have slopes, so please walk carefully.
There are several attractions nearby to expand your itinerary. These include the "World Plum Park" within the Mitsu Nature Observation Park and the beautiful Shinmaiko Beach. There are also local accommodations (Kokumin Shukusha) available, making this a great base for travelers looking to combine nature with historical sightseeing.
As the grove features natural walking paths, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and practical clothing. Since it can be breezy in early spring, bringing a light jacket for temperature regulation is a good idea.
