Aya Keiba is a type of "Kusa-keiba" (grass racing) held in Aya Town, Higashimorokata District, Miyazaki Prefecture. Kusa-keiba is characterized by amateur racing that does not follow formal professional racing laws, and notably, no betting on horse races is permitted. Aya Town has a long history as a center for horse breeding, and this event serves as a deeply rooted community tradition that symbolizes that local heritage.
Aya Town has been known as a horse-breeding region since ancient times, and Kusa-keiba was once a very popular activity. Although the tradition was once interrupted, Aya Keiba was revived in 1982 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Aya Town government. Since its revival, it has been held many times (with 33 recorded instances as of 2014), serving as a vital venue for passing down local culture to future generations. It is not merely a sporting event, but a cultural occasion deeply connected to the town's history.
