Awai Jinja is a prestigious shrine located in Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture, recognized as one of the twenty-four Sanuki Engeki-shiki Naishi Shrines. Deeply revered by the local community for centuries, it is affectionately known as the 'Shrine of Hydrangeas.' The highlight of the shrine is the breathtaking sight of approximately 3,000 hydrangea plants in full bloom from June to July, creating a sea of color that attracts visitors from far and wide.
The shrine boasts a history of over 1,000 years. Historically, it served as the central shrine for the Kaita District and was once referred to as 'Kaita Daimyojin' due to its vast and sacred grounds. During the Edo period, the shrine received significant patronage from powerful families such as the Ikoma and Kyogoku clans. Although historical records mention the loss of the main shrine buildings due to war during the Tensho era, the site has been preserved through local community efforts, particularly through the continuous planting and cultivation of the hydrangeas that define its beauty today.
The primary draw is the stunning display of hydrangeas in early summer. A diverse palette of colors—including purple, pink, blue, and white—decorates the slopes and approach paths, offering a harmonious view of nature and traditional architecture. Visitors can also explore the various sub-shrines within the grounds, such as Sugio-jinja, Ara-tama Jinja, Awashima Jinja, Ji-jinja, and Itsukushima Jinja, to appreciate the complex and beautiful layout of the shrine complex.
The best time to visit is between May and July, when the hydrangeas are at their peak beauty. In June, the 'Ajisai Festival' (Hydrangea Festival) is held, featuring local traditions. During the festival, visitors can enjoy cultural performances typically held between 10:00 AM and 1:30 PM.
During the June festival, the atmosphere is enriched by traditional performances such as Taisho-koto (Japanese zither) music, Wadaiko (Japanese drumming), and local traditional dances. Beyond the seasonal events, the shrine offers a peaceful space for spiritual reflection and a chance to experience the tranquil, traditional atmosphere of Japan amidst lush greenery.
The area around the shrine is rich in history. Nearby, you can visit the Fujime Castle ruins near Mount Fujime, which was once a stronghold of the Saito clan during the Muromachi period. Other nearby historical sites include Fudo-in Temple, Fujime Inari, and Kenzan Jinja, making it an excellent destination for a historical walking tour.
Please observe standard shrine etiquette during your visit. Since the hydrangea viewing often involves walking on uneven terrain, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. As is common with many traditional shrines, please carry cash for any small offerings (Saisen) or local activities.
