Atami Baien is a sprawling 4.4-hectare municipal garden located in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is renowned for hosting Japan's earliest plum blossoms and its latest autumn foliage. The garden features 469 plum trees across 60 different varieties, including ancient trees over 100 years old. Additionally, with approximately 380 maple trees, the garden offers a rich tapestry of seasonal colors. As Atami developed as a famous hot spring resort, this garden serves as a perfect space where nature and culture harmonize.
The history of this garden dates back to 1886 (Meiji 19). It began when Senzai Choyo of the Ministry of Home Affairs proposed the need for a walking park to encourage moderate exercise alongside hot spring-based medical treatments. At one point, the area was managed as imperial property, giving it a prestigious history. Following a major renovation in 2008, the garden now stands as a representative cultural facility of Atami, where modern facilities coexist beautifully with traditional landscapes.
The garden is filled with many scenic elements. A major highlight is the "Meien Go-kyo" (Five Bridges of the Garden) spanning the Hatsukawa River, consisting of five beautiful bridges: Zenka, Geigetsu, Sobi, Chujo, and Kofu. Another must-see is the Korean Garden, created in 2001 to commemorate the Japan-South Korea summit, which recreates the style of a 400-year-old Korean residence and garden. Visitors can also visit the Masahiro Sawada Memorial Museum, which showcases works by the Order of Culture recipient, or relax in the footbath located in the inner area of the garden.
The garden's appearance changes dramatically with the seasons. From early January to early March, the "Plum Blossom Festival" is held, filling the air with the scent of early-blooming plums. From May to June, you can enjoy the fresh greenery, and from mid-November to early December, the "Autumn Colors Festival" showcases the latest autumn foliage in the region. During certain periods, night-time illuminations are held, creating a magical, dreamlike atmosphere.
Beyond walking through nature, there are many cultural experiences available. Near the Korean Garden, there is a footbath where you can relax in warm water while enjoying the scenery during the Plum or Autumn Color festivals. At the Masahiro Sawada Memorial Museum, you can immerse yourself in Japanese art through sculpture. The garden also features many stone monuments and commemorative plaques, allowing you to feel the weight of history as you stroll.
The area surrounding Atami Baien is a peaceful residential district lined with historic hotels and resort condominiums. It is within walking distance of JR Kinomiya Station and offers easy access to the lively shopping streets and beach areas near Atami Station. Many visitors combine a visit to the garden with a trip to nearby hot spring facilities.
As the garden features gentle slopes, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please dress appropriately for the season. For payments at the museum or during special festival periods, both cash and credit cards are generally accepted.
