Atagawa YOU-yu Beach is a scenic coastline located in Higashiizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. The area is characterized by its breathtaking view of the Izu Seven Islands visible on the horizon. During the summer season, it becomes a popular destination for swimming and beach activities. Its proximity to a famous hot spring (onsen) district makes it a unique destination where visitors can enjoy both the refreshing ocean and relaxing hot springs.
The surrounding area has long been developed as a hot spring resort, growing alongside the rich history of Atagawa Onsen. The coastline itself is a scenic spot that utilizes the natural topography of the region, offering a different aesthetic with every season. During the peak summer swimming season, the beach serves as a vital hub for local leisure and community life.
The most striking feature of this beach is the silhouette of the Izu Seven Islands floating on the sea. On clear days, the outlines of the islands are clearly visible near the horizon, providing a perfect backdrop for photography. Additionally, a well-maintained promenade runs along the coast, making it an ideal environment for leisurely strolls by the sea. Depending on the season and wave conditions, the area is also a known spot for surfers, offering a dynamic maritime landscape.
The peak season for swimming is during the summer (primarily from mid-July to late August). During this period, the beach is perfect for daytime water activities and ocean leisure. Outside of the summer months, the area offers a much quieter atmosphere, ideal for surfing or simply enjoying a peaceful walk along the shore to feel the sea breeze. Even in winter, the coastal scenery remains calm and beautiful.
During the official swimming season, visitors can enjoy various water sports and swimming. Depending on the swell, the beach is also used for surfing and other marine sports. The coastal promenade allows for scenic walks while enjoying the ocean view. Furthermore, the area is home to local attractions like the Atagawa Banana Wani Garden, allowing travelers to experience local culture and wildlife alongside the sea.
The beach is located right next to the Atagawa Onsen district. Within walking distance, you will find numerous accommodation facilities and restaurants. A notable landmark, the Atagawa Banana Wani Garden, is only about a 5-minute walk away, making it easy to combine a beach trip with local sightseeing. The area is also conveniently located near the Kitagawa Onsen area for extended travel.
When planning to swim, please bring a swimsuit, sandals, a change of clothes, and sunscreen. The official swimming hours are typically from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM during the summer. For local amenities and parking, it is highly recommended to carry cash, as some facilities may not accept credit cards or electronic money. Please respect the local environment and follow etiquette when using the promenade and surrounding hot spring facilities.
