Guide
Atukawa Onsen is a historic hot spring destination located in Higashiizu Town, Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture. The town features a unique landscape where approximately 19 traditional inns (ryokan) and hotels are nestled along a narrow strip of land between the mountains and the sea. The most striking feature is the incredibly high temperature of the spring water, which reaches nearly 100°C (212°F). This results in constant plumes of steam rising from the source-spring areas, creating a nostalgic and atmospheric scene of a traditional Japanese hot spring town. Beyond the thermal waters, visitors can enjoy the proximity to the beautiful coastline and unique wildlife experiences.
The history of this area traces back to legends of its discovery. It is said that the monk Ota Dokan discovered the hot springs after witnessing a monkey healing its wounds in the steaming waters flowing from the riverbed. While the area has long been a place of healing, it has also faced challenges, including a major fire in 1969 and an earthquake in 1978. Through these eras, the town has preserved its cultural identity, including local traditions such as the worship of the 'Okiyake Benzaiten' (a deity associated with water and healing). Today, the town has successfully revitalized its charm as a vibrant tourist destination.

Atukawa Onsen offers a blend of traditional relaxation and active leisure. A standout attraction is the 'Atukawa Banana Crocodile Garden,' which consists of three distinct areas (Main Garden, Crocodile Garden, and Branch Garden). Here, you can observe crocodiles from around the world, tropical plants, and even red pandas, providing a unique natural history experience. For a more relaxing experience, visitors can enjoy the 'Atukawa Hot Park,' a free outdoor foot bath located along the coast where you can listen to the waves. Additionally, the 'Atukawa Yunohana Park' near Atkaura Station offers another free foot bath, allowing travelers to easily refresh themselves while moving between destinations.
While the hot springs are enjoyable year-round, summer (July and August) is particularly lively. During this season, the 'Atukawa YOU-YU Beach' becomes a popular spot for swimming, and the area often hosts summer fireworks displays, adding a spectacular way to experience the night scenery. For those seeking a more tranquil atmosphere, a stroll during the early morning or at dusk is highly recommended, as the rising steam from the hot springs becomes more visible and evocative during these times.

There is much more to do here than just bathing. At the Atukawa Banana Crocodile Garden, you can engage in a quasi-scientific experience observing exotic flora and fauna. The coastal foot baths offer a perfect way to unwind and soothe your fatigue from sightseeing. By combining beach leisure with hot spring relaxation, visitors can fully enjoy the natural gifts of both the sea and the mountains. The area is designed to offer diverse ways to experience the warmth of the springs and the beauty of the natural environment.
Several other charming hot spring areas are located near Atukawa Onsen, such as Okawa Onsen, Kitagawa Onsen, and Inatori Onsen, each offering a different atmosphere. The scenic coastline of Higashiizu is also excellent for driving or coastal walks. Access to the wider Izu Peninsula is convenient via the Izukyu Line from Atukawa Station, making it easy to include this area in a larger travel itinerary through Ito or Atami.
When strolling through the hot spring town, comfortable walking shoes and clothing are recommended. Since you may use foot baths, shoes that are easy to slip on and off are very convenient. For visits to the Banana Crocodile Garden, casual, easy-to-move-in attire is best. Please note that while many places accept credit cards, carrying cash is highly recommended for smaller local shops or traditional facilities. Please respect the quiet atmosphere of the hot spring town and follow local etiquette to ensure a pleasant environment for all visitors.
