The Asuwa River Cherry Blossom Trees are a premier cherry blossom destination located along the banks of the Asuwa River, which flows through the center of Fukui City. Spanning approximately 2.2km from Kida Bridge to Shinmeiri Bridge, the area is home to about 600 Somei Yoshino cherry trees. This location has been officially selected as one of the 'Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan.' In spring, the harmony between the flowing river and the soft pink blossoms creates a breathtaking landscape that serves as the iconic scenery of Fukui.
The Asuwa River is a vital waterway running through the heart of Fukui City. The cherry blossom-lined paths along its banks have long been cherished as a local symbol, developed alongside the river's landscape preservation efforts. The presence of the Somei Yoshino trees serves a cultural role, signaling the arrival of spring to both residents and visitors while preserving the natural environment. This area is not just a natural viewpoint but a carefully managed part of the region's historical and cultural landscape.

The most spectacular sight is the long avenue of approximately 600 Somei Yoshino trees stretching along the riverbank. The area around Kagetsu Bridge is particularly stunning, as the large, mature trees on both sides of the embankment create a high density of blossoms that fill your field of vision. The riverside paths are perfect for a leisurely stroll, allowing you to feel the changing seasons while walking parallel to the water. The shifting colors of the blossoms against the river scenery are a hallmark of this location.
Typically, the cherry blossoms begin to bloom in late March and reach full bloom in early April. The scenery is most beautiful during this peak period. During the daytime, you can enjoy the striking contrast between the blue sky, the clarity of the river, and the pink cherry blossoms. Additionally, during certain spring events, the area may feature nighttime illuminations, allowing you to witness a completely different, magical side of the blossoms after dark.

The riverbanks of the Asuwa River provide an excellent environment for relaxation and sightseeing. During the full bloom season, visitors can enjoy walking along the water or practicing photography while listening to the river's flow. Local seasonal events are often held in the area, offering a chance to experience local spring traditions. It is an ideal spot to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and enjoy the refreshing air by the water.
Since the Asuwa River Cherry Blossom Trees are located in central Fukui, the area is easily accessible from major transport hubs like JR Fukui Station. The surrounding neighborhood also features various historical buildings and other sightseeing spots, making it easy to incorporate this visit into a broader Fukui city tour. The area beautifully blends urban convenience with natural beauty.

We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for your stroll. As temperatures can fluctuate during the spring season, it is wise to bring a light jacket or layers. Due to expected crowds during peak season, using public transportation is highly recommended. Please be mindful of local residents and businesses; do not engage in street parking near the river. Additionally, for safety and privacy, the use of drones or any unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is strictly prohibited.
