The Aso Panorama Line is the nickname for the scenic roads leading toward the Aso Five Peaks in the center of the Aso Caldera, Kumamoto Prefecture. Formerly a toll road, it is now a free public road consisting of Kumamoto Prefectural Road 111 (Aso Yoshida Line/Minami-Aso Route) and Kumamoto Prefectural Road 298 (Aso Koen Shimono Line). Spanning approximately 37 km, this high-altitude driving course offers unparalleled views of the Aso mountains and the volcanic crater plains.
This route was once operated as the "Aso Mountain Road," a toll road managed by the Japan Highway Public Corporation. Today, it has been reorganized as a free public road, making the natural beauty of Aso more accessible to everyone. Parts of the grasslands along the route are used as pastures, where you can witness the local way of life through the grazing of cattle and horses, showcasing a culture that lives in harmony with volcanic activity.
The greatest appeal of the Aso Panorama Line is the dynamic scenery that unfolds as you drive. The powerful view of the Nakadake Crater and the vast, rolling grasslands of Kusasenri-ga-hama are iconic symbols of Aso. The northern "Bo-chu Line" offers a relaxing route through pastures near the crater and Kusasenri, while the southern "Minami-Aso Route" features more varied, mountainous landscapes. Throughout the drive, you will have constant views of majestic peaks like Mt. Nekote and Mt. Taka through your car window.
The Aso Panorama Line reveals a different face in every season. From spring to summer, the contrast between the lush green grass and the volcanic steam from the crater is beautiful. In autumn, the scenery around Kusasenri shifts to more subdued, earthy tones. The landscape also changes with the weather and time of day; early mornings with crisp, clear air or misty periods can offer truly mystical and ethereal views. Please note that access roads to the Nakadake Crater may be restricted depending on volcanic activity, so checking current status in advance is essential.
There are various activities to enjoy along the drive. For instance, you can enjoy horseback riding around the Kusasenri-ga-hama area. For a unique perspective, you can also take a sightseeing helicopter flight near the Aso summit to view the caldera from above. This route is a perfect centerpiece for a Kumamoto road trip, connecting famous spots like Aso Shrine, various waterfalls, and hot spring areas like Shirakawa Onsen.
Starting from the Aso Panorama Line, many tourist spots are within easy reach. To the north, you can access Aso Shrine and the Kurokawa Onsen area. To the south, the area expands toward the Minami-Aso Railway and the Shirakawa Onsen district. Many viewpoints and parking lots are well-maintained throughout the caldera, allowing you to stop your car and soak in the scenery at your leisure.
As this is primarily a driving route, travel by vehicle is expected. Regarding clothing, please be aware that the temperature at higher altitudes tends to be lower than in the lowlands. It is highly recommended to bring a light jacket, especially during spring or autumn. If you plan to walk around the viewpoints like Kusasenri, comfortable walking shoes are best.
