Cape Ashizuri is the southernmost tip of Shikoku, located in Tosashimizu City, Kochi Prefecture. The landscape is defined by a massive granite plateau formed by the relentless waves of the Pacific Ocean over millions of years, creating a truly dynamic geological formation. The most striking feature is the panoramic view of the vast Pacific Ocean. The sight of the clear blue sky meeting the ocean—which shifts beautifully from emerald green to deep navy—and the rugged, sheer cliffs is nothing short of overwhelming. It is also a famous spot where the curvature of the Earth can be felt as the horizon appears as a gentle arc.
This area has long served as a vital landmark for maritime safety. The symbol of the cape, the Cape Ashizuri Lighthouse, began operation in 1914 (Taisho 3). Standing 18 meters tall with a luminous intensity of 2 million candelas, it is one of the largest lighthouses in Japan. Since its inception, it has guided countless ships through the powerful Kuroshio Current, which first reaches these shores, standing as a testament to the history of seafaring and the strength of nature.
The highlight of Cape Ashizuri is undoubtedly the view from the observatory. With a 270-degree unobstructed view, you can see the beautiful coastline stretching from Cape Ashizuri to Kanosaki. The white lighthouse standing against the blue sky and sea creates an iconic, picturesque silhouette. For a closer look at the coastline, you can walk along the Ashizuri Cape Park, a natural trail approximately 2 km long, where you can observe the diverse coastal topography up close.
The appearance of Cape Ashizuri changes dramatically depending on the time of day. The sunrise and sunset are particularly spectacular; because the coast offers an unobstructed view of the horizon, visiting during these times allows you to witness the sun's movement over the water. Depending on the season, you may also see camellia flowers blooming around the cape. Please note that this region is often subject to strong winds (sometimes referred to as a 'typhoon alley'), so be mindful of the weather and wave height when visiting.
Visitors can experience the raw power of nature through their senses. As you walk the well-maintained trails, you can observe the dynamic way waves crash against the rocks and create white foam, or simply look down at the vast ocean from the heights. Given its geographical position where the Kuroshio Current first makes landfall, the energy of the sea is palpable. The area around Cape Ashizuri is dotted with various sightseeing spots that showcase the natural beauty of Tosashimizu City. The Ryuguku, Mioshiri, and Kanosaki areas are particularly famous for their continuous, beautiful coastlines. There are also various facilities nearby where you can enjoy local cuisine and accommodations, making it a popular destination for road trips and motorcycle touring.
As a coastal cape, Cape Ashizuri can experience very strong winds regardless of the season. We highly recommend bringing windproof clothing and layers to adjust your temperature. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for the trails and observatory areas. Please respect the natural environment by taking all your trash home with you. While the observatory and cape areas are generally open to the public, please check the operating hours for specific nearby facilities.
