Asahiyama Forest Park is a scenic forest park located at the summit of Mt. Asahi (238.2m) in Takase, Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture. Historically known as "Asebi-yama," the name reflects its status as the first place to receive the morning sun in the region. Developed in 1988 through community cooperation, the park features a unique architectural style, including a building designed to resemble a traditional Japanese castle tower (tenshukaku). The park is characterized by its lush greenery and the seasonal beauty of various flowers and plants.
The park was established in 1988 through the dedicated efforts of local residents and the contribution of trees from various regions. Today, it serves as a sanctuary for biodiversity, housing over 20,000 trees across 47 different species. The summit also holds spiritual significance, home to the Ise Asahi Motomiya Shrine, which symbolizes the harmonious coexistence of Shinto and Buddhist traditions. The "Aguchi Castle" structure, modeled after a castle keep, serves as a cultural landmark that preserves the local history and identity.
The centerpiece of the park is the castle-style observation tower known as "Aguchi Castle." The structure consists of three levels: the first floor houses a local history museum, the second floor features topographical models and floral displays, and the third floor serves as an observation deck. From this height, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the Mitoyo cityscape, the mountains of Sanuki, and the distant Seto Inland Sea. The park is also a famous cherry blossom destination, with roughly 2,000 Yoshino cherry trees creating a sea of pink in the spring.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. The best time to visit is from late March to early April, when the 2,000 cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Because it is one of the first places to catch the morning light, it is a highly popular spot for viewing the first sunrise of the New Year. In summer and autumn, visitors can enjoy lush greenery and vibrant seasonal foliage. During the day, the contrast between the blue sky and the Seto Inland Sea is striking, while the sunset offers a dramatic and romantic atmosphere.
The park is ideal for nature walks and family recreation. There are play areas for children to enjoy the outdoors, making it a great destination for families. Additionally, the onsite campsite allows visitors to disconnect from daily life and relax in a serene forest environment. The area surrounding the park is known for its stunning coastal landscapes. The famous "Chichibugahama Beach," often called the "Maldives of Japan" for its photogenic scenery, is easily accessible by car. Another nearby landmark is the "Sky Torii" at Takaya Shrine. Combining a visit to Asahiyama Forest Park with these nearby locations allows you to fully experience the natural beauty of Kagawa Prefecture.
As the park is located in a mountainous area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please stay on the maintained paths when using the observation deck or walking trails. If you plan to use the campsite, please check reservation requirements in advance. While most areas are free, please carry cash for any specific facility-related fees. To preserve the natural environment, please ensure you take all trash home with you and respect the local wildlife and vegetation.
