Asahiyama Park is a beautiful destination in Himi, Toyama, where history and nature blend seamlessly. Originally part of the hilly landscape known as "Dofune-yama," the park was established to commemorate the victory in the Russo-Japanese War and the imperial visit to the Hokuriku region. The park is home to approximately 270 Somei Yoshino cherry trees and is officially recognized as one of the "70 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Toyama." In spring, the slopes are blanketed in a breathtaking sea of pink. With the recently developed "Miharashi-no-oka" (Lookout Hill), large playground equipment, and expansive lawns, it is a perfect getaway for families and travelers seeking a peaceful connection with nature.
The history of the park dates back to the Meiji era. It began in 1907 with the planting of pine, cherry, and maple trees to commemorate the Russo-Japanese War. In 1909, it was opened as a county park to celebrate the Emperor's visit to the Hokuriku region. At the summit stands a bronze statue of Emperor Jinmu, with a base featuring calligraphy by the famous historical figure Nogi Maresuo. Because of this, the park is sometimes referred to as "Eihō Park." Throughout the Showa era, the park served as a cultural symbol for the region, once hosting permanent sumo arenas and housing the famous "Buri Kozo" fountain from the Himi station area.
There are many diverse spots to enjoy within the park. The most iconic feature is the spring cherry blossom scenery, where roughly 270 Somei Yoshino trees decorate the slopes of Asahiyama. Visitors can also experience the historical weight of the park at the Emperor Jinmu statue near the summit. The "Miharashi-no-oka" lookout, opened in 2021, offers wide-open, refreshing views. For families, the playground area is a major draw, featuring a 23-meter long roller slide, a symbol tower over 6 meters tall, and over 30 types of play equipment. Additionally, the massive 10,000-square-meter lawn and the convenient center house make it an ideal spot for relaxation.
Asahiyama Park reveals a different face with every season. Spring (March to April) is the most highly recommended time to visit, as the entire park is enveloped in a cloud of pink blossoms. Autumn (October to November) is also beautiful, with the changing colors of the maple and other trees creating a vibrant landscape. For families, daytime visits are ideal for utilizing the playground, while the evening offers a beautiful view from the hilltop. While the park is open 24 hours, visiting during daylight hours is recommended for a safe and pleasant stroll.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities surrounded by nature. Children can burn off energy on the large playground equipment, including the roller slide and symbol tower. The vast lawn area is perfect for a relaxing picnic or a quiet moment of rest.
