Asahigaoka Park is a historic park located in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture. This site was once the location of Kashima Castle, and today, the remnants of its history—such as the stone walls, the Red Gate, and Shoin Shrine—are carefully preserved. The paths leading into the park are lined with cherry trees, creating a magnificent 'tunnel of flowers' during the spring season. The harmony between natural beauty and historical architecture makes it a truly unique destination.
The history of this park dates back to the era of Kashima Castle. Although much of the castle was lost during the Saga Rebellion in 1874, the significant historical remains are still cherished and protected today. The 'Red Gate' (Akamon) located within the park served as the main entrance to the castle and is officially designated as a Prefectural Important Cultural Property. Additionally, the Shoin Shrine honors the successive lords of the Kashima domain, from the first lord, Nabeshima Tadayoshi, to the 13th lord, Naoaki. This deep historical background elevates the park from a simple green space to a vital site for understanding regional history.
The most spectacular sight is the cherry blossom scenery in spring. The rows of cherry trees create what is locally known as a 'flower tunnel' when in full bloom. Other essential sights include the Red Gate, the weathered stone walls that evoke a sense of the past, and the architecture of Shoin Shrine. These historical structures provide a striking contrast to the seasonal natural landscapes.
The peak season is from March to April. During this time, the cherry blossoms reach full bloom, bathing the entire park in vibrant color. A particularly magical experience is the nighttime illumination held during certain events. The sight of illuminated cherry blossoms against the backdrop of the historic gate and stone walls offers a completely different, ethereal atmosphere compared to daytime visits.
At Asahigaoka Park, visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while observing historical structures and nature. In spring, walking through the cherry blossom tunnel or viewing the illuminated night blossoms is highly recommended. The surrounding area also features the Samurai Residence Street, allowing you to combine your visit with a walk through a historic neighborhood to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere.
There are several historic spots within walking distance. The 'Samurai Residence Street' is nearby, offering a glimpse into the atmosphere of old Japan. Other nearby attractions include the Textile and Dyeing Museum (Nogomi Doll Workshop) about a 16-minute walk away, and the historic Tanjin-in temple or the Hizen Yutoku Onsen (Ba-no-yu) hot spring facility, located roughly 17 minutes away.
As the park is a natural and historical site, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please dress according to the season. While there is no entrance fee or parking fee for the park itself, please carry cash or a credit card if you plan to visit nearby facilities or shops. English language support is limited to signage and may vary at surrounding commercial facilities. No advanced reservations are required for entry. Photography is generally permitted, but please respect the rules and etiquette of the shrine areas. Please be aware that the terrain includes stone walls and uneven steps, so proceed with caution regarding accessibility.
