The Asahidake Ropeway connects the base of Mt. Asahidake (elevation 2,291m) in Daisetsuzan National Park to the high-altitude Sugata-mi area. The one-way trip from the base station to the Sugata-mi station takes approximately 10 minutes, offering a fast way to reach the alpine environment. As you ascend, you can witness the dramatic shift in vegetation and look down upon a dynamic volcanic landscape.
The Daisetsuzan mountain range contains the highest peaks in Hokkaido and has been a site of nature worship since ancient times. Mt. Asahidake stands as a central figure in this landscape, characterized by its unique terrain formed by volcanic activity. The development of this ropeway has made the breathtaking high-altitude environment accessible to many, regardless of their mountaineering experience.
The primary attraction is the scenery surrounding the Sugata-mi Station. Depending on the season, visitors can observe diverse alpine plants, unique volcanic formations, and the rugged rock faces near the summit. Notable seasonal highlights include the lush alpine flowers in summer, the vibrant autumn foliage, and the pristine snowscapes in winter. The transition of the landscape during the ascent provides a stunning visual journey.
The ropeway schedule varies depending on the season. During the summer (June to October), service runs approximately every 15 minutes, making it ideal for hiking. In the winter (late October to May), the interval is roughly 20 minutes.
Note: Operating hours fluctuate based on the season and weather. The first lift typically departs between 6:00–9:00 AM and the last lift between 3:40–6:00 PM. Please check the official website for the day's specific schedule.
The ropeway serves as a gateway to high-altitude exploration. Around the Sugata-mi area, you can enjoy walking trails set against a backdrop of volcanic scenery. It is a perfect starting point for serious hikers or a scenic way to enjoy the views without a strenuous climb.
The area around Mt. Asahidake is dotted with hot spring resorts. Shirogane Onsen is approximately a 1-hour 10-minute drive away. When traveling toward Asahikawa, the area is also within reach of Asahikawa Airport, Asahiyama Zoo, and the scenic Biei region, allowing for a comprehensive Hokkaido sightseeing itinerary.
As you will be at a high altitude, please prepare for significant temperature changes. Even in summer, we strongly recommend bringing a warm jacket.
