Senzawa-gawa Sakura Tree-lined Path (Nakayama River Park) is a stunning cherry blossom destination located at the foot of Mt. Chokai in Yuza, Yamagata Prefecture. Approximately 60 Somei-yoshino cherry trees form a beautiful canopy along the left bank of the Senzawa River. What makes this location truly special is the harmony between the blossoms and the surrounding landscape. Unlike many modern areas with concrete-lined rivers, this site preserves traditional stone embankments. This, combined with the local architecture featuring black roof tiles and white walls, creates a quintessential, nostalgic Japanese landscape. In the background, the majestic, snow-capped Mt. Chokai rises, blending natural beauty with historical charm.
The cherry blossoms here carry significant historical weight. The trees were originally planted in 1959 to commemorate the marriage of the then Crown Prince (the current Emperor of Japan). While 60 trees were originally planted, 58 remain today, flourishing with an age of approximately 60 years. These trees serve as living monuments to the local community's dedication to preserving their heritage, lending a sense of dignity and cultural depth to the scenery.
The most breathtaking view is the seamless integration of the river flow, the textured stone embankments, and the canopy of Somei-yoshino blossoms. During peak bloom, visitors are treated to a sea of white and pink petals set against the grand silhouette of Mt. Chokai. The surrounding traditional houses with their distinctive black tiles and white walls further enhance the feeling of stepping back in time. During the seasonal 'Nakayama River Park Cherry Blossom Festival,' the area transforms with 'Koinobori' (carp streamers) floating down the river and evening light-ups using traditional lanterns, offering a completely different atmosphere than daytime.
The peak season is typically around mid-April. During this time, you may see the iconic sight of carp streamers floating on the river alongside the full blooms. Visit during the day to see the sharp contrast between the pink blossoms and the white peaks of Mt. Chokai, or visit in the evening to experience the soft, warm glow of the 'Bonbori' lanterns during light-up events.
This is a destination for peaceful strolls and cultural observation. You can walk along the riverbank to observe the craftsmanship of the stone walls and the traditional architecture of the neighborhood. During spring festivals, the visual experience of the illuminated trees and floating carp streamers provides a unique cultural spectacle. Even a short 30-minute visit allows you to fully absorb the density of this beautiful scenery.
The area is surrounded by the rich natural beauty of Yuza, including shrines related to Mt. Chokai and scenic coastal spots. It is an excellent destination for a scenic drive. The location is conveniently situated about a 10-minute drive from Yuza Station, making it a practical stop for travelers exploring the region.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the paths along the riverbank and embankments may have uneven surfaces depending on the weather. Please note that while the park is free, you may need cash for nearby facilities or parking. English-language support is limited in the immediate area. As this is a residential area, please be mindful of noise levels and respect the privacy of local residents. While there are paths along the embankment, be aware of potential steps or slopes for accessibility.
