Arisugawa-no-miya Memorial Park is a vast park located in Minami-Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo, where you can feel the deep connection between nature and history. The park is designed to maximize the undulating terrain of the Azabu plateau, creating a unique landscape. It is widely known as a "city oasis" that offers a sense of being deep in the mountains despite being in the center of Tokyo. The park features diverse natural scenery, including ponds, hills, and valleys, providing a peaceful retreat for all visitors.
The land has a storied past, having served as the sub-residences for the Kasama, Akō, and Morioka Nambu clans. In the Meiji era, the ownership changed, and in 1896, the land became the property of the Arisugawa-no-miya family. It was later opened to the general public in 1934, becoming a beloved park for the community. This site is cherished not only as a green space but also as a significant cultural and historical landmark that continues to preserve the heritage of the region.
The greatest attraction is the stroll garden (Rinsen-shiki-kaiyu-shiki) that utilizes the natural topography. The landscape transitions beautifully from the high ground on the east to the low-lying areas on the southwest, with lush greenery of tall and short trees creating a stunning view. The sound of the mountain stream flowing into the pond on the southwest side, the various wild birds, and the seasonal flowers are constant delights for visitors. Additionally, several historical statues are placed throughout the park, adding a touch of elegance to your walk.
Arisugawa-no-miya Memorial Park reveals a different face in every season. You can enjoy the plum blossoms and fresh greenery in spring, the lush greenery and soothing sounds of water in summer, the vibrant autumn foliage, and the serene, quiet landscapes of winter. The park is home to many birds and insects, so the wildlife you encounter will change with the seasons. For example, you might spot a Kingfisher during certain times, making it an excellent spot for nature observation.
Within the vast grounds, you can enjoy a peaceful walk surrounded by nature. Walking along the stream path allows you to spend a relaxing time listening to the gentle murmur of the water. The park is also family-friendly, featuring various playground equipment for children, including climbing structures, swings, spring riders, slides, and a sandpit with a wooden house. For a more cultural experience, you can also visit the adjacent Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library to enjoy reading in a natural setting.
The southeast side of the park borders the German Embassy, contributing to the sophisticated and calm atmosphere of the neighborhood. The presence of the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library also makes this a great place to connect with knowledge amidst nature. Even in the heart of the city, this area provides the perfect environment to disconnect from daily life and refresh your mind.
Because the park features undulating terrain and various walking paths, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please dress according to the season to ensure a comfortable visit.
