Arahi Tenjin (commonly known as Sugawara Shrine) is a shrine located in Tenjin, Kanoya City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Its most striking feature is its location atop a rocky mountain that extends into the sea. During high tide, the shrine takes on a mystical appearance, looking as if it is floating upon the ocean; because of this, the rock formation is often called "Tenjin-jima." This breathtaking landscape is recognized as one of the "Kanoya Hakkei" (Eight Scenic Views of Kanoya), offering a unique harmony between natural beauty and sacred architecture.
The official name of the shrine is Sugawara Shrine, and it is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a prominent historical figure. While the exact date of its founding is unknown, some traditions suggest its origins date back to the Tenbun era (1532–1555). The shrine has long been a place of worship for local residents, with a tradition of many visitors arriving on the 25th of every month for local festivities. Due to its location jutting out into the sea, it serves as a profound site of faith deeply connected to the natural elements.
The greatest draw is undoubtedly the view of "Tenjin-jima" floating on the sea. The landscape changes its expression depending on the tide, constantly captivating visitors. The contrast between the solemn atmosphere of the shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane and the surrounding lush nature is a must-see. On clear days, the blue of the sea and sky blends perfectly with the shrine's silhouette, making it an exceptional spot for photography.
While the scenery is beautiful year-round, we highly recommend timing your visit with the tides. At high tide, you can witness the most ethereal sight of the shrine appearing to float on the water. Additionally, visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to enjoy the vivid colors of the sea and the shrine architecture. On sunny days, the contrast between the blue sky and the ocean is particularly stunning.

The shrine is located along Prefectural Road 68 in a naturally rich area. If traveling by car from the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal (Sakurajima Port), it is approximately a 1-hour drive via National Routes 224 and 220. This makes it a perfect stop on a scenic driving route to enjoy the natural beauty of Kanoya City.
Please observe proper etiquette when visiting the shrine. While the shrine grounds are open 24 hours a day and can be visited at any time, please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor as it is a sacred site. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the terrain near the rocky coast and mountain may be uneven. Please note that cash is required for offerings (Saisen) or purchasing amulets (Omamori). As English-language signage and staff support may be limited, it is helpful to familiarize yourself with basic Japanese Shinto prayer customs beforehand.
