Aqua World Oarai is a massive, state-of-the-art aquarium located in Oarai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, directly facing the Pacific Ocean. The facility spans a total floor area of approximately 19,800 square meters across five floors. The total water volume of the exhibition tanks reaches about 5,100 tons, housing approximately 68,000 specimens across 580 species. The aquarium is particularly renowned for its shark collection, boasting the highest number of shark species in Japan (55 species as of 2017). Known as a 'Comprehensive Ocean Museum,' it offers unique viewing experiences, such as a dedicated sunfish tank and one of the world's largest taxidermy displays.
The facility has a long history, originally opening as the 'Oarai Aquarium' in 1952, and evolving into the second-generation Oarai Aquarium with an attached pool in 1970. After a renewal process in May 2001, it reopened in March 2002 as the current 'Aqua World Oarai.' Beyond being a simple exhibition space, the museum uses scientific and educational methods to deepen visitors' understanding of the global environment and marine ecosystems. The facility also has a proven track record of resilience; during the Great East Japan Earthquake, staff-led evacuations and the use of backup generators and water tanks helped minimize damage to the marine life.
The facility is divided into eight themed zones. A signature attraction is the 'Encountering the Sea Zone' near the entrance, where you can observe the 'Great Tank of Encountering the Sea' featuring a massive school of approximately 20,000 sardines. In the 'Dark Sea Zone,' visitors can experience the atmosphere of the deep ocean through various jellyfish species and 3D video effects. Other must-see exhibits include one of the world's largest Great White Shark taxidermy specimens, a full skeletal specimen of a Sperm Whale measuring 13.76 meters, and a dedicated sunfish tank.
Standard operating hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM). Every Saturday, the aquarium hosts the 'NIGHT AQUAWORLD' event, allowing you to experience a different side of the aquarium after dark. To avoid crowds, note that the facility tends to be busy with school groups during weekdays in May, June, September, and October; visiting on weekday mornings or during the weekend is recommended for a more relaxed experience. Please note that the aquarium may close for maintenance in June and December, so checking the official website in advance is highly recommended.
Aqua World Oarai offers more than just observation; it provides educational experiences. For example, the 'Aquarium Exploration Tour' offers a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes world of marine life care and management. The exhibits are designed to deepen your understanding of biological ecology and the connection between the ocean and the Earth's environment. The facility is also family-friendly, featuring dedicated kids' corners for younger visitors.
The aquarium is surrounded by major leisure spots in Ibaraki. The nearby Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka City is a famous sightseeing destination known for its beautiful seasonal landscapes. The Oarai area is also a great base for tourism, with plenty of seafood restaurants and easy access via Oarai Station and Nakasato Station. For those traveling by car, there is ample free parking for approximately 750 vehicles.
The entire facility is non-smoking; please use the designated smoking areas near the large outdoor bus parking lot. Pets are not allowed inside, with the exception of service animals (such as guide dogs). Photography restrictions may apply in certain exhibition areas. Since most of the exhibits are indoors, wearing comfortable walking shoes is recommended for easy movement. To ensure a smooth entry, it is highly recommended to purchase tickets in advance via the 'asoview!' website, as tickets are generally not sold at the counter on the day of your visit.
