Apto no Michi is a beautiful 6.3km walking trail developed along the former path of the Abt system, which once operated on the Shin'etsu Main Line. The section between Yokokawa Station and Kumonokira Station is a living museum of railway engineering, featuring numerous structures that showcase the history of Japanese rail technology. The trail includes six bridges and ten tunnels, offering a close-up look at the industrial heritage of the era. A major highlight is the Old Maruyama Substation, which is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.
This area holds significant historical value as the site where the Abt system was once used to overcome steep gradients. Today, the route has been preserved and repurposed as a hiking trail to protect and showcase these railway relics. The structures, such as the Old Maruyama Substation, serve as vital cultural assets that tell the story of Japan's rapid industrial and technological advancement during the development of the railway system.
As you walk the course, you will encounter several significant railway-era structures. The most notable are the brick-lined structures known as the "Megane Bridge" (Spectacles Bridge) and the Old Maruyama Substation. The path also features six bridges and ten tunnels, which are essential elements for understanding the engineering-intensive era of the past. Additionally, there are scenic viewpoints along the route where you can enjoy beautiful views of Lake Usui.
Apto no Michi is open year-round. However, please note that the lighting inside the tunnels is subject to specific hours. The tunnel lights are turned on from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. After 6:00 PM, the lights are turned off, making the tunnels dark and potentially dangerous. We highly recommend visiting during daylight hours. The spring and autumn seasons are particularly pleasant for hiking through the changing scenery.
This is a perfect destination for a historical hike. Starting from Yokokawa Station, you can trace the original railway route while observing changes in terrain and passing through various tunnels and bridges. The one-way journey from Yokokawa Station to Kumonokira Station takes approximately 125 minutes, while the return trip from Kumonokira to Yokokawa takes about 96 minutes. It is a rewarding way to experience nature alongside industrial history.
Before or after your hike, you can visit nearby attractions such as Lake Usui or relax at "Toge no Yu" (hot spring). For those interested in a deeper dive into railway history, the Usui Pass Railway Culture Village is also located in the vicinity. Parking is available at several points, including Lake Usui, Megane Bridge, and Kumonokira, with space provided for large vehicles.
Since this is a hiking trail, please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. Be mindful of your footing, especially when passing through tunnels. If you plan to use nearby facilities like Toge no Yu, please check if they accept your preferred payment method (cash or credit card). Remember that tunnel lighting ends at 6:00 PM, so plan your schedule accordingly. Please respect local etiquette and follow any posted signs regarding photography and public conduct.
