The 'Oni no Sentanita' (Devil's Washboard) surrounding Aoshima Shrine is one of the most iconic scenic landscapes in Miyazaki Prefecture. As the name suggests, the coastline is covered with a unique formation of rocks that look like a series of giant, parallel washboards. This site is designated as a National Natural Monument, allowing visitors to witness the incredible sculptural beauty created by nature over millions of years.
This distinctive landscape was formed during the late Miocene epoch (approximately 7 million years ago) by sedimentary processes in the ocean. The area consists of alternating layers of hard sandstone and soft mudstone. These rock layers, which were once beneath the sea, were brought to the surface by geological shifts and subsequently sculpted by the relentless action of waves and seawater, resulting in the striking patterns seen today. This geological formation extends for about 8km from Aoshima southward toward Kinchiku Island.
The greatest draw is the rhythmic, undulating pattern of the coastline carved by the waves. From a distance, the sight of the regular ridges and grooves creates an almost surreal atmosphere, as if a giant washboard is floating on the ocean. When the tide recedes, the area reveals tide pools and exposed rocky terrain, offering a fascinating look at the complex textures of the earth. The sheer scale and precision of these natural shapes are truly overwhelming.
While the area is accessible year-round, the scenery and available activities change significantly depending on the tide. If you wish to explore the tide pools or enjoy shore-side exploration, it is highly recommended to check the local tide tables in advance. For photography enthusiasts, bright daylight hours are ideal, as the contrast between the deep blue sea, white waves, and the textured rock formations is most vivid and striking.
During low tide, the area becomes a playground for nature lovers. You can enjoy 'iso-asobi' (shoreline exploration) by searching for small fish, crabs, and shells in the tide pools. Observing these small creatures in their natural habitat is a wonderful way to connect with the local ecosystem. It is a delightful activity for families with children, providing a hands-on way to learn about nature's wonders.
The 'Oni no Sentanita' stretches along the coast for about 8km south of Aoshima Shrine. Since Aoshima Shrine itself is a famous landmark, a popular travel route is to visit the shrine for prayer and then explore the natural scenery nearby. The surrounding coastline is also a popular route for scenic drives through Miyazaki's beautiful coastal scenery.
To fully enjoy the coastal environment, we recommend wearing comfortable, casual clothing. Because the terrain can be uneven and slippery, it is much better to wear sturdy walking shoes or sneakers rather than sandals. Please be mindful of your footing when exploring rocky areas or tide pools.
