The 'Oni no Sentanita' (Devil's Washboard) surrounding Aoshima Shrine is one of the most iconic scenic landscapes in Miyazaki Prefecture. History & Geological Background

This distinctive landscape was formed during the late Miocene epoch (approximately 7 million years ago) by sedimentary processes in the ocean. The area consists of alternating layers of hard sandstone and soft mudstone. These rock layers, which were once beneath the sea, were brought to the surface by geological shifts and subsequently sculpted by the relentless action of waves and seawater, resulting in the striking patterns seen today. This geological formation extends for about 8km from Aoshima southward toward Kinchiku Island.

The greatest draw is the rhythmic, undulating pattern of the coastline carved by the waves. From a distance, the sight of the regular ridges and grooves creates an almost surreal atmosphere, as if a giant washboard is floating on the ocean.
