Aoshima Jinja Hadaka-mairi is a traditional Shinto ritual held every January at Aoshima Jinja in Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture. The event is rooted in a myth involving the deity Hohihodemi-no-mikoto; when the deity returned from the undersea kingdom, villagers rushed to welcome him with such enthusiasm that they arrived without even dressing. Today, the event is typically held around the 'Coming of Age Day' holiday. Watching many men clad in traditional attire plunge into the freezing seawater for 'Misogi' (ritual purification) is a powerful and deeply spiritual experience that showcases the resilience of Japanese culture.
The origins of this ritual date back to the age of mythology. The core of the event is the story of the villagers who welcomed the deity with such fervor that they had no time to prepare clothing. While it was once held on the 17th day of the 12th lunar month, the modern 'Hadaka-mairi' serves as a profound ritual of purification. It is believed that performing this 'Misogi' in the cold sea provides immense spiritual benefits, often described as being as significant as performing 1,000 visits to a shrine. For the local community, it remains a vital spiritual cornerstone.
The most striking sight is the sight of numerous men, wearing traditional white robes, happi coats, or fundoshi (loincloths), marching boldly into the ocean. The sight of them wearing white headbands and moving through the crashing waves creates an atmosphere of intense energy and heat, even in the cold. This is a seasonal event held exclusively in January (primarily around the Coming of Age Day holiday). If you miss this window, you will have to wait another year to witness it. Because it takes place during the peak of winter, please be prepared for very low temperatures and strong sea winds. The rituals often begin in the early morning, offering a solemn and crisp atmosphere in the fresh New Year air. We highly recommend bringing heavy clothing and heat packs if you are observing the event.

Preparation is key for the January weather. We strongly recommend bringing heavy coats, heat packs (kairo), gloves, and earmuffs to stay warm. The sea breeze can be quite harsh, so windproof clothing is ideal. If there are any participation fees, please bring cash. Please observe the ritual with respect and avoid obstructing the movement of the participants while taking photos.
