Guide
Located just a 5-minute walk from the front exit of Aomori Station, Aomori Gyosai Center (also known as Furukawa Market) is a lively hub of local life. Situated near the coast, it serves as a vital center for the local community's food culture. The biggest draw is the "Nokke-don" experience. There is no fixed recipe; instead, you become the chef! You can wander through approximately 30 different stalls to select your own ingredients, ranging from plump scallops from Mutsu Bay to fresh seafood caught that very morning, as well as meat and side dishes. It is a truly personalized culinary adventure.
Aomori Gyosai Center has long functioned as a market deeply connected to the daily lives of local residents. It is a place where you can directly experience the bounty of Aomori's rich seas, with fresh ingredients arriving straight from local fishermen. More than just a dining area, it is a cultural landmark that represents the local food scene, earning high praise from tourists. The energetic atmosphere of this traditional market provides a wonderful window into the authentic, everyday food culture of Aomori.

The highlight is the process of creating your own "Nokke-don." After purchasing a dedicated meal ticket at the information desk, you walk through the market, selecting and adding ingredients to your bowl one by one. You might see glistening fresh sashimi, large scallops, or even savory meat dishes at the various stalls. The process feels like a treasure hunt as you search for your favorite toppings. Once your bowl is complete, you can enjoy your creation at the on-site seating area while soaking in the bustling market atmosphere.
The center opens early, around 7:00 AM, making it an ideal destination for a hearty breakfast or a stop after an early morning stroll. While fresh ingredients are available year-round, the quality and variety of seafood, such as scallops, are particularly impressive during peak seasons. Please note that the center may close once the rice supply runs out, so arriving early is highly recommended to ensure you get the full experience. Additionally, during the summer "Nebuta Festival" period, the surrounding area can become very crowded, and operating hours may change, so checking ahead is advised.

To enjoy a "Nokke-don," follow these steps:
1. Purchase meal tickets at the information desk (e.g., 1 ticket for 190 JPY, or a set of 12 tickets for 2,200 JPY).
2. Go to a stall with a red sign to exchange a ticket for a bowl of rice (e.g., a standard bowl requires 1 ticket).
3. Visit the approximately 30 different stalls and use your tickets to pick and add your favorite ingredients, such as sashimi, side dishes, or meat.
4. Once your customized bowl is ready, enjoy your meal at the designated seating area.
This step-by-step process allows you to craft a truly unique and delicious seafood bowl tailored to your taste.
The area around Aomori Gyosai Center is rich with sightseeing spots near Aomori Station. You can visit the Aomori Prefectural Tourist Center (Aspam) or enjoy a stroll around the station area. For those traveling by car, the center is approximately 15 minutes from the Aomori Chuo IC and about 35 minutes from Aomori Airport, making it easy to integrate into a larger regional itinerary.
Cash is required to purchase the meal tickets. Prices are approximately 190 JPY for a single ticket and 2,200 JPY for a set of 12 tickets. Please ensure you carry enough cash for these transactions.
While there is signage available and some staff members may offer basic English assistance, the system is primarily based on the ticket exchange method. It is a straightforward process even without much English support.
No advance reservations are required. You can start your experience immediately upon arrival by purchasing your tickets on-site.
Photography is permitted within the market; however, please be mindful of other customers and respect the hygiene standards of the food preparation areas.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for walking through a busy market. As the center handles fresh raw food, maintaining good personal hygiene is appreciated.
The market features many flat walkways, making it relatively easy to navigate. However, please be aware that paths can become narrow and crowded during peak hours.
Because "Nokke-don" involves fresh raw ingredients, the prepared bowls cannot be taken to-go. If you wish to purchase fresh seafood to take home, please visit a separate fishmonger within the market.
