Shirogane Blue Pond is a breathtaking scenic spot located in Shirogane, Biei, Kamikawa District, Hokkaido. The pond was formed by a dam constructed as a disaster prevention measure following the eruption of Mount Tokachi. The water exhibits a stunning turquoise or emerald green color, and the sight of withered larch trees standing vertically in the water creates a unique and surreal landscape. The defining characteristic of this location is the fusion of natural beauty and man-made structures, resulting in a serene and ethereal atmosphere.
The pond was created in connection with disaster prevention works to prevent volcanic mudflows caused by the eruption of Mount Tokachi in December 1988. It is an artificial pond formed as water accumulated behind a concrete block dam built in the main stream of the Biei River. The landscape is defined by the trees, such as larch and white birch, that were submerged and left standing in a withered state. The pond gained international fame after being discovered by a professional photographer in 1997, leading to its recognition as a world-class destination through various photo books and media coverage.
The greatest attraction is the vibrant blue surface of the water, caused by the reaction of sunlight with minerals in the water. As colloidal particles scatter light, the shorter wavelengths of blue light are emphasized, creating the brilliant color. The withered trees standing as if floating on the surface are the iconic symbol of this pond. The color of the water and the overall impression of the landscape change depending on the season, weather, and time of day, offering new discoveries with every visit.
The Blue Pond shows different faces throughout the seasons. From spring to autumn, the turquoise water creates a beautiful contrast with the lush green surroundings. On sunny days during the daytime, the light reflection is at its most beautiful, making it the best time to observe the vivid blue hues. In contrast, during the winter season (October s24 to April 22), the area features special light-up events. The nighttime illuminations allow you to experience a magical, dreamlike landscape illuminated by blue light amidst the darkness, providing a truly special winter experience. Please note that during winter, the water surface may be harder to see due to heavy snow cover.
