Located along the scenic coastline of Otaru, the Blue Cave (Ao no Dokutsu) is a renowned natural landmark within the Niseko Shakotan-Otaru Quasi-National Park. The area is characterized by its dramatic, high rock walls that plunge into the sea, creating a striking texture against the water. To prioritize visitor safety, direct entry into the cave via small boats is currently restricted. Instead, cruise routes have been established to approach the mouth of the cave closely, allowing passengers to witness the magnificent natural architecture and the high-clarity blue waters from a safe vantage point.
This area is part of a protected coastal quasi-national park, preserved for its exceptional natural beauty. While boat tours once allowed visitors to enter the interior of the cave, safety concerns regarding falling rocks led to a change in operations. Based on local safety protocols, the experience has transitioned to a cruise-style viewing method that maintains a safe distance while still providing an immersive view of the landscape.
The greatest appeal is the breathtaking contrast between the textured, towering cliffs and the vibrant hues of the sea, best viewed from the deck of a boat or cruise ship. The way light reflects off the water and the way the blue scenery emerges under specific weather conditions creates a once-in-a-lifetime visual experience. Approaching the entrance of the cave allows you to feel the sheer power and scale of nature up close.
The best time to visit is during the summer months from May to September. Because the color of the sea and the way light penetrates the water change depending on the season, time of day, and weather, the scenery offers a different expression every time you visit. Bright daylight hours are particularly recommended to witness the maximum clarity and the most vivid color shifts in the ocean.
The primary activity is scenic sightseeing via cruise ships or boats. Although you cannot enter the interior of the cave, the cruise provides a front-row seat to observe the unique shapes of the rock walls and the cave entrance. It is a wonderful way to visually experience the grandeur of nature within an open, refreshing maritime environment.
The site is easily accessible from Otaru city. You can access various boarding points near the North Canal, the Shukutsu area, or around the Shiriya fishing port. Since Otaru is a major tourist destination, many visitors combine a scenic cruise with sightseeing in the Otaru Canal area.
