Ankokuji is a temple of the Myoshin-ji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, located in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. It holds a significant historical background, having been founded by Ashikaga Takauji, the founder of the Muromachi Shogunate, to pray for national peace and stability. The temple grounds are dotted with precious cultural assets that tell the story of Japanese history and architectural mastery, inviting visitors to step back into the medieval era. The history of Ankokuji dates back to the mid-14th century. Originally founded by Ashikaga Takauji, the temple was once a large-scale complex with numerous halls. However, it endured a turbulent history during the Sengoku period, caught in the conflicts between local powers such as the Miki and Takeda clans, which resulted in the loss of many structures to fire. The current main hall was rebuilt in the early Edo period (specifically in the first year of Kan'ei) by Kanamori Shigeyori, the third lord of the Hida Takayama Domain. This resilience through war and time adds a layer of profound historical depth to the site.
The most significant treasure is the "Ankokuji Kyozō" (Sutra Repository), designated as a National Treasure. Built in 1408, this structure features exquisite Zen-style (Zenshu-yo) architecture and houses a precious "Rinzo" (a rotating sutra repository), which is among the oldest of its kind in Japan. Another must-see is the "Statue of Priest Zuigan," housed in the Kaizan-do; this sculpture is an important cultural property that utilizes a rare sculptural technique from the medieval period. Additionally, tucked away in the rear of the grounds, you will find the "Kumano Shrine Main Hall," which preserves the architectural forms of the Muromachi era and offers a glimpse into the roots of shrine architecture in the Hida region.
