Angel Road is a scenic sandbar located in Tonosho, Shodoshima, Kagawa Prefecture, that reveals itself during low tide. This long, narrow path stretching about 500 meters is affectionately known as the 'Angel's Walkway.' Because it only appears when the tide recedes, you can only walk across it during specific windows of time, twice a day. The location is famous for its breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea and its many islands.
While once a place used for activities like clam digging, the area has gained immense popularity as a 'Sacred Spot for Lovers.' Legend says that couples who hold hands while walking across the middle of the path will be blessed with a lasting bond. This romantic reputation has made it a staple of Shodoshima tourism. It is also officially recognized as a beautiful scenic spot, being selected as one of the '88 Scenic Views of Shikoku.'
The most magical moment is seeing the white sandy path emerge from the sea. Walking along this path feels like a mystical experience as you witness the natural cycle of the tides. You can enjoy the serene beauty of the Set-Inland Sea and the surrounding islands while you stroll. Please note that the path leads toward Yoshima Island, but since the far end is private property, visitors are generally expected to stay within the accessible walking distance.
The landscape of Angel Road changes dramatically depending on the tides. The path only appears twice a day during low tide. While it is accessible in any season, knowing the exact timing of the tide is the key to experiencing this natural wonder.
