Amano Iwato Jinja Nishi Motomiya is a sacred shrine located in Takachiho Town, Miyazaki Prefecture. It is renowned as a significant site related to the "Amano Iwato" (Heavenly Rock Cave) from Japanese mythology. The shrine serves as a place of worship for the sacred cave located behind the main hall, which has been a center of faith since ancient times. Within the grounds, you can also visit the Amano Iwato Chokokan, a museum that showcases the rich history and archaeological findings of this region.
Nishi Motomiya has long played a sacred role as a place to commemorate the legends of Amano Iwato. Originally a simple place for remote worship, it is now an important shrine under the Shinto Main Office. Historical records from the Edo and Meiji periods mention visitors to this site, highlighting the long-standing devotion of local residents. Currently, the shrine enshrines Ohirume no Mikoto, another name for the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami.
The greatest highlight of Nishi Motomiya is the view of the sacred Amano Iwato cave from the worship area. Additionally, the Amano Iwato Chokokan museum houses approximately 2,000 artifacts, including pottery, stone tools, and decorative items like magatama (comma-shaped beads) and stone arrowheads unearthed from the area. These items provide a window into the lives of ancient people. You can also experience the mythical atmosphere through features like the "Ogatama no Ki" (Sacred Tree), which is said to be related to the origins of Kagura dance.
The area around Amano Iwato Jinja changes beautifully with the seasons. In early spring, the sacred tree produces small white flowers, while in autumn, it bears bright red fruits. Visiting during specific times can also allow you to witness Shinto rituals and ceremonial offerings, providing a deeper cultural experience. For instance, certain morning hours may feature scheduled rituals or traditional offerings.
Visitors can request formal prayers (Gokigan) through the shrine office. These prayers can be made for various purposes, such as business prosperity, family safety, health, or success in examinations. During certain events, you may also have the chance to witness Kagura dance performances or other traditional ceremonies, offering a profound way to connect with Japan's traditional spiritual culture.
Near Nishi Motomiya lies Higashi Motomiya, which plays a contrasting role across the Iwato River. The entire Takachiho area is famous as a setting for Japanese myths, surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes. The Amano Iwato Chokokan also offers a way to learn about the region's history from an archaeological perspective.
Please observe basic shrine etiquette during your visit. If you wish to request a formal prayer, please visit the shrine office. The office is open from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. A separate admission fee is required to enter the Amano Iwato Chokokan museum. As this is a sacred site, please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor at all times.
