Amagoi-no-taki Falls (Amagoi-no-taki) is a stunning natural landmark located in Kamiyama Town, Myozai District, Tokushima Prefecture. This site is highly prestigious, having been selected as one of the "Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan." It is also recognized as a significant local natural spot through lists such as "Shikoku Mizube 88" and "Tokushima 88 Scenic Views." The most striking feature is the "Meoto-taki" (Husband and Wife Falls) formation, where two distinct waterfalls stand side-by-side. On the left is "Odaki" (Husband Waterfall) with a 27-meter drop, and on the right is "Medaki" (Wife Waterfall), which cascades down 45 meters across three distinct tiers. The dynamic interplay of these two falls creates a powerful and awe-inspiring landscape for all visitors.
The name of the falls is deeply rooted in local tradition. Historically, when the region suffered from severe droughts that threatened crops, local farmers would gather here wearing traditional straw capes (minogasa) and strike bells and drums to perform rituals to pray for rain. This gave rise to the name "Amagoi-no-taki" (Rain-Praying Falls). The site embodies a deep sense of reverence for nature and gratitude for water. Furthermore, the area is a place of spiritual significance, housing shrines dedicated to the "Ryuo-shin" (Dragon King God), who governs water, and "Fudo-son," a deity believed to ward off calamities.
The greatest appeal of Amagoi-no-taki is the contrast between the two falls. The way the Medaki waterfall breaks into three dynamic tiers compared to the vertical descent of the Odaki waterfall showcases the incredible artistry of nature. As you walk along the trails leading to the main falls, you will encounter several other smaller waterfalls, such as Uguisu-taki, Fudo-taki, Momiji-taki (Maple Waterfall), and Kannon-taki. These serve as beautiful landmarks along your journey. During the autumn season, the surrounding trees turn vibrant colors, creating a stunning contrast against the white spray of the falling water.
While the falls are beautiful year-round, the most recommended time to visit is autumn (October to November). During this period, the surrounding mountains are ablaze with autumn colors, making the scenery exceptionally colorful. The lush greenery of early summer also offers a refreshing and cool atmosphere. It is best to visit during daylight hours to fully appreciate the transparency of the water and the vivid colors of the vegetation. Please note that trail conditions can change depending on the weather, so visiting during bright, clear days is ideal.
The primary activity here is nature walking and exploration. As you traverse the paths toward the falls, you can observe various geological formations and smaller cascades. For those interested in history, the nearby Takanoyama Higan-ji Temple, which holds legends related to Empress Himiko, offers a chance to connect with the area's spiritual past. Listening to the sound of rushing water amidst the silence of the forest provides a deeply meditative and peaceful experience.
There are many spots near the falls to deepen your understanding of Kamiyama's nature. Takanoyama Higan-ji, located at an altitude of 700 meters, is a great place to touch upon local history. After your walk, you can relax at the nearby Kamiyama Onsen (Hot Springs). For more regional information, local guides often highlight other beautiful landscapes in Tokushima, such as the terraced rice fields of Fuden-no-Tanada or the autumn colors at Zuigan-ji Temple.
Access to the falls is via walking trails. Because the paths can be damp or slippery, we strongly recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. As this is a natural environment, please be prepared to use cash (JPY) for any nearby local transport or facilities, as card payments may not be available. English-language signage and support are limited, so it is helpful to check maps in advance.
