Akino Himawari no Sato is a captivating tourist destination located in Chikusei City, Ibaraki Prefecture, that radiates an overwhelming presence during the summer months. The most striking feature is the sight of approximately 1 million "double-flowered sunflowers" (yae-himawari) blooming in front of Mt. Tsukuba, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. Unlike standard sunflowers, these double-flowered varieties offer a much fuller, more voluminous appearance, creating a sea of gold that mesmerizes every visitor. Under the bright summer sun, the contrast between the vivid yellow blossoms and the deep blue sky creates a breathtaking natural spectacle.
The surrounding region is a fertile agricultural area where a culture of living in harmony with the seasons is deeply rooted. The "Sunflower Festival" held at Akino Himawari no Sato is a local tradition designed to celebrate the region's natural abundance. The best time to visit is during the summer, specifically from July to August. We highly recommend visiting during the "Sunflower Festival" period when the flowers are in full bloom. You can enjoy the sunflowers glowing brilliantly under the daytime sun, or experience the enchanting, illuminated scenery from evening to night. The landscape changes its expression depending on the time of day and the shifting seasons, so be sure to take your time to soak it all in.
During the festival, various seasonal activities are organized. One unique experience is the "Cut Flower Garden," where you can purchase freshly cut sunflowers to take home as a summer memory (e.g., 5 stems for 500 JPY). The venue also hosts music stages and seasonal events like the "Wind Chime Road," allowing you to experience the sounds and lights of the season in a natural setting.
The Akino area is a place where nature and culture blend seamlessly. The surrounding area is dotted with historical temples, shrines, and beautiful landscapes, many of which are featured on the "Chikusei Charm Walking Map." You can enjoy a relaxing stroll while taking in the views of Mt. Tsukuba and the local natural beauty.
As most activities take place outdoors, preparation for sun and heat is essential. Please bring a hat, plenty of water, and take precautions against heatstroke.
