Akechidaira Lookout (Akechidaira Ropeway) is a premier observation spot located in Saio, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It offers a spectacular view of Lake Chuzenji, Mount Nantai, and the famous Kegon Falls. The journey involves a 0.3km ropeway ride connecting Akechidaira Station to the Lookout Station, allowing visitors to experience a high-altitude panoramic view. While the area once featured a large rest house, it now provides a well-maintained observation space where you can appreciate the dramatic natural topography of Nikko from a bird's-eye view.
The history of this ropeway dates back to November 3, 1933, when it was opened by the Nikko Mountain Railway. Following a temporary suspension in 1943 due to wartime-related restrictions, service was resumed by Tobu Railway in 1950. While the area was once connected by streetcars and cable cars, the ropeway remains the primary way to access the heights as road infrastructure evolved. The ropeway also maintains international connections, such as a friendship agreement with the Maokong Gondola in Taiwan, highlighting its place in global tourism networks.
The highlight is the observation space located on the second floor of the Lookout Station. From here, you can gaze upon the vast surface of Lake Chuzenji, the silhouette of Mount Nantai, and the nearby Kegon Falls from a high vantage point. Visitors can also see traces of the former cable car tracks near the station, adding a sense of history to the experience. Even the ropeway cars have been updated with a design motif inspired by the Tobu Railway's 'Spacia X,' making the ride itself a part of the attraction.
Akechidaira Lookout offers different charms throughout the seasons. From spring to summer, the area is characterized by lush greenery and the deep blue of Lake Chuzenji. In autumn, the surrounding mountains transform into a vibrant display of colorful foliage, which is spectacular when viewed from above. Please note that hiking trails near the lookout may close during winter. Crucially, there is a scheduled long-term suspension for renewal work (expected from January 16, 2026, to August 31, 2027). Beyond the ropeway ride, you can enjoy walking through nature around the lookout. A hiking course leading toward Chanoki-daira is maintained near the station, allowing for a relaxing stroll amidst nature. Additionally, a new building near Akechidaira Station features a shop for beverages and facilities including restrooms, making it a convenient spot to rest while enjoying the view.
Access to Akechidaira Station is via the Irohazaka Winding Road (Second Irohazaka). Please be aware that this road has one-way restrictions (Nikko Station to Lake Chuzenji direction only) during certain periods, so plan your driving route carefully. The area is surrounded by Nikko's most iconic landmarks, including Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls, making it easy to combine this visit with other sightseeing routes.
