Akashi Kaikyo Park is a vast national park spanning the Awaji and Kobe districts of Hyogo Prefecture. The Awaji area, in particular, is characterized by its beautiful scenery that coexists with nature, developed on the site of the former Nada Mountain sand extraction area. Located on high ground with a close view of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the park offers a dynamic landscape where the sea, sky, and lush vegetation harmonize. More than just a recreational facility, it serves as an "Ecomuseum," a place where visitors can experience nature through all five senses while learning about biodiversity and environmental conservation.
The history of this park began with its development in the 1990s. Following the decision to start the project in 1993, the development of the Awaji area progressed from 1995. The first phase of the Awaji area opened on March 21, 2002, and has been developed in stages since then. The transformation of a former sand extraction site into this sprawling green oasis is a symbol of nature restoration. Additionally, the Kobe district focuses on the "Aina Satoyama Park" concept, preserving and restoring the traditional Satoyama landscape, reflecting a deep respect for local culture.
The park is dotted with diverse facilities and gardens designed to delight every visitor. Notable spots include "Daichi no Niji" (Rainbow of the Earth), "Mizu no Iwato" (Water Gate), and the "Tendan Terrace," all of which showcase the aesthetic beauty of natural topography and flora. As the park is quite large, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes (sneakers are best) and bringing a hat and sunscreen, as there are many open areas with little shade. While some signs are in English, most information is in Japanese, so using a translation app is helpful. Payment for specific facilities or shops may accept cash, credit cards, or transportation IC cards (like Suica/Pasmo). Most of the time, no reservation is required, but please check for special events. To protect the environment, please take your trash home and refrain from picking plants.
