Akashi Kaikyo Bridge World is located in Tarumi-ku, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. More than just a scenic viewpoint, it serves as an educational hub where visitors can delve into the history and sophisticated engineering of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. A major highlight is the Maiko Marine Promenade located within the bridge structure on the Kobe side. Visitors can take an elevator up to a height of 47m above sea level, where they can walk approximately 150m out toward the ocean. For a thrilling experience, certain sections of the floor are transparent, allowing you to look directly down at the sea below.
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is a symbol of modern Japanese engineering, having entered service in 1998. During its construction, the bridge survived the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake. Although the earthquake caused a displacement that lengthened the bridge by about one meter, the construction successfully continued, proving the incredible resilience and strength of the design. The illumination of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge changes colors depending on the season and time. Typically, the colors follow a seasonal pattern: green in spring, blue in summer, red in autumn, and yellow in winter. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, the lights remain on until midnight. Additionally, at every full hour and half-hour, special light patterns inspired by rainbows or birthstones are displayed, creating a beautiful spectacle alongside the bridge's dynamic silhouette.
Visitors can learn about the scientific principles behind the bridge at the Science Museum. You might even find samples of the actual cable wires for sale, giving you a tangible sense of the strength required to support such a massive structure. Walking along the Maiko Marine Promenade offers the sensation of walking over the ocean, especially when looking through the transparent floor sections.
