Akawa Kannon Shidare-zakura is a scenic destination located in Takayama Village, Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture. The centerpiece is a magnificent weeping cherry tree (shidare-zakura) over 200 years old, standing approximately 15 meters tall. This particular variety is known for its strikingly deep, reddish-pink blossoms. The tree is uniquely positioned on a steep stone embankment, appearing to lean out over the slope, creating a dramatic and ethereal silhouette against the sky.
The site is home to Akawa Kannon, a temple with a rich history spanning over 400 years. Local legend suggests that the main hall was constructed by the master carpenter Kamehara Wada Shiro. Adjacent to the temple stands a massive cedar tree estimated to be 400 years old, highlighting the area's long-standing history as a sacred place of worship and spiritual devotion.
The most iconic view is the single, massive weeping cherry tree that leans over the slope, framed by the red-roofed Kannon temple in the background. To reach the temple, visitors must ascend approximately 150 steep stone steps. The sight of the deep-colored blossoms, the ancient 400-year-old cedar, and the historic temple architecture creates a profound sense of harmony between nature and spirituality.
The ideal time to visit is from late March to April, when the weeping cherry blossoms are in full bloom. During this window, you can witness the intense, reddish hues of the flowers. As this is an open-air outdoor site, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the colors under natural sunlight.
