Akakura Onsen Ski Resort is located in the Akakura Onsen area of Myoko City, Niigata Prefecture. Situated in one of the world's most prolific heavy snowfall zones, the resort boasts exceptional snow depth and quality. The slopes feature a wide range of terrain, from gentle courses for beginners to challenging runs for intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders. Together with the adjacent Akakura Kanko Resort, it forms a premier destination in the Myoko Kogen highland area.
This area has served as an international tourism hub since the opening of the historic Akakura Kanko Hotel in 1937. The region's heritage is deeply rooted in the Akakura Onsen hot spring, which has been a famous medicinal bath destination since the Edo period. As the area developed into a modern ski resort, the infrastructure—including lifts and slope maintenance—has been continuously upgraded to strengthen its status as a world-class mountain resort.
The slopes are characterized by a diverse selection of courses tailored to different skill levels. The Akakura Kanko Resort area offers long-distance cruising via gondola and specialized fields perfect for advanced carving enthusiasts. Meanwhile, the Akakura Onsen Ski Resort area features many beginner-friendly slopes at the base, providing a safe and welcoming environment for first-timers. Additionally, the nearby Akakura Chanel ski jump stadium allows visitors to experience the vibrant culture of professional snow sports.
The peak ski season runs from December through April. For the best experience, visit in January, February, or March to enjoy the most abundant snow coverage. On clear days, we highly recommend enjoying lunch at one of the mountain-side restaurants with an outdoor terrace. During the green season, visitors can also enjoy hiking around Mount Myoko using the Myoko Kogen Sky Cable.
Beyond skiing and snowboarding, the resort is well-equipped with multiple rest houses and shops. You can easily rent high-quality gear or purchase essential accessories at the on-site shops. After a day on the slopes, you can immerse yourself in the local culture by soaking in the historic Akakura Onsen hot springs, a tradition that dates back centuries.
The area surrounding the ski resort is dotted with a variety of accommodations to suit every traveler. Options range from the prestigious Akakura Kanko Hotel to Resort Inn Taiju, cozy pensions, and guest houses. For a complete relaxation experience, nearby hot spring facilities like "Takinoyu" allow you to combine high-energy snow sports with traditional Japanese wellness.
To prepare for your trip, rental equipment is available at various shops on-site. The information centers (such as Yodel and Kumado) are fully equipped with changing rooms and lockers. For easier movement, free shuttle buses operate between the parking lots and the slopes. Regarding payments, most restaurants and shops within the facilities accept credit cards in addition to cash.
