Aizu Kogen Takahata Ski Resort (also known as Kita-Nikko Takahata Ski Resort) is located in Minamiaizu Town, Fukushima Prefecture, a region famous for its rich natural beauty and heavy snowfall. The resort is surrounded by mountains reaching altitudes of 2,000 meters, offering spectacular views of Mount Bandai and the Nasu mountain range on clear days. The facility features 10 courses and 5 lifts. While it has a long history of skiing, it is now a popular destination for snowboarding as well. The terrain is designed to accommodate a wide range of skill levels, from wide, gentle slopes for beginners to technical, challenging runs for experts.
The resort opened in 1989 as a village-run facility with 8 courses and 4 lifts. It underwent expansion in 1991 with additional lifts and courses to enhance the experience. Today, the resort is operated by DMC Aizu Co., Ltd. (formerly Mac Earth Resort Fukushima) under a designated manager system. It has long served as a cornerstone of winter leisure in the Aizu region, deeply rooted in the local community.
The ski area is divided into four distinct zones. The Black Area is the main section, characterized by wide-open slopes that are perfect for practicing carving turns or fundamental skills for beginners. The Blue Area offers scenic, sweeping slopes (the Blue Highway) with breathtaking vistas. The Red Area features mogul courses, making it an ideal environment for intermediate skiers looking to refine their technical skills. Finally, the Orange Area includes some ungroomed sections, providing a more varied and adventurous riding experience. Visitors can enjoy a dynamic day on the snow by navigating between these different areas via the lifts.
The best time to visit is from December to March, when the snow accumulation is at its peak and the snow quality becomes exceptionally stable. January and February are particularly recommended for those seeking high-quality powder snow typical of this heavy snowfall region. During the bright daylight hours, you can enjoy the contrast between the white snow and the majestic peaks of Mount Bandai and the Nasu range. Depending on the time of day and weather conditions, the character of the slopes changes, offering a unique experience throughout the winter season.
Beyond skiing and snowboarding, the resort offers a variety of course settings that make it a great destination for families and friends. Beginners often start their journey in the Black Area, which is easily visible from the center house. Advanced riders can challenge themselves with mogul training or high-speed carving turns on the expansive slopes. Being surrounded by high mountains provides a special, immersive atmosphere that allows you to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
The area around the resort is home to many traditional Japanese guest houses (minshuku), providing cozy accommodation. After a day on the slopes, visitors can relax at nearby hot spring facilities, such as Azuki Onsen, to soothe their muscles. The surrounding Aizu region is also rich in local culture and scenic spots, allowing travelers to enjoy much more than just winter sports.
