Aizu Bukeyashiki is a museum where you can connect with the history, culture, and spirit of the Aizu Clan through its historical buildings, artifacts, and hands-on experiences. The site spans a vast area of approximately 7,000 tsubo (about 23,140.5 m2), featuring reconstructed structures such as the residence of the Aizu clan official Saigo Yoromo, as well as various administrative buildings (jinya), tea rooms, and museums. It is a precious location where you can feel the authentic daily life and way of being of the samurai through these life-sized historical reconstructions.
This facility was developed to preserve and pass down the history of the Aizu Clan to future generations. The buildings, including the Saigo Yoromo residence, were crafted by the architect Katsumi Yamamoto, who specialized in traditional folk house construction, giving them significant architectural value. The exhibits and structures serve to communicate the politics, culture, and samurai spirit of the Aizu region to the modern era, preserving the essence of the historical sites.
The grounds are dotted with various facilities that evoke a sense of history. The centerpiece is the historical viewing zone centered around the residence of Saigo Yoromo, which includes an administrative building, a tea room, and several museums that tell the story of samurai life. Additionally, the site utilizes a smartphone-based "Audio Concierge" system. By scanning QR codes, visitors can listen to audio guides for each facility, allowing for a much deeper understanding of the history through auditory explanation alongside visual exhibits.
Aizu Bukeyashiki reveals different beautiful expressions depending on the season. The months of April, May, September, October, and November are particularly recommended, as the surrounding natural environment harmonizes beautifully with the historical architecture, making it an ideal time for a stroll. Opening hours vary by season: 【April to November】 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM (Last entry 5:30 PM); 【December to March】 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM (Last entry 5:00 PM). Visiting in the early morning allows for a more tranquil-paced exploration of the intricate architectural details.
Beyond simple sightseeing, you can truly feel the culture of the era on-site. The facility includes "Goko Kobo Kokon," a shop for local goods, and "Kuyotei," a dining area, where you can relax and enjoy a meal while immersing yourself in Aizu's culture. Using the audio guide service allows you to explore the grounds with a sense of time travel, gaining a profound understanding of each exhibit.
Many historical sites are located near Aizu Bukeyashiki. For instance, the "Former Takizawa Honjin," a National Important Cultural Property, is a short drive or a 36-minute walk away. This building once served as a resting place for high-ranking officials and became a headquarters during the Boshin War. There are many other historical spots within Aizu Wakamatsu city, allowing you to create a rich historical exploration route starting from Aizu Bukeyashiki.
The grounds feature historical stone pavements and uneven surfaces. Specifically, the historical viewing zone around the Saigo Yoromo residence contains many steps and uneven paths. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. For shopping and dining, please check your payment methods (cash/card) in advance. While the dining and shop areas are accessible, the historical viewing zones and the official's residence have many steps and may be difficult to navigate with a wheelchair.
