Zazawa-cho-ba, located in Oe Town, Yamagata Prefecture, is a cultural landscape formed by the intersection of the Mogami River's boat transport history and the structure of a castle town. From the medieval to the early modern period, this area developed as a vital hub for the distribution and transit of goods via the Mogami River. The current cityscape preserves the skeletal structure of an Edo-period castle town and the bustling atmosphere of a thriving riverbank settlement.
