Aichi Kodomo no Kuni is a massive recreational facility spanning approximately 1 million square meters in Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture. The park's core mission is to foster children's physical health and emotional growth through a "dialogue with nature, other children, and parents." Unlike standard amusement parks, this is an environment designed for deep connection with the natural world. Highlights include a real steam locomotive powered by coal and steam, go-karts, mini cars, and dedicated areas for science-based crafts and workshops.
The facility was established to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Aichi's prefectural administration. Since its opening on October 29, 1974, it has served as a vital cornerstone for the community's development. Historically, the park has held significant local importance, once receiving a visit from the then Crown Prince and Princess (now the Emperor and Empress of Japan). Today, it remains a beloved destination where families gather to learn and play amidst nature.
There are numerous attractions designed to spark curiosity. The standout attraction is the authentic steam locomotive that runs on coal and steam. At the Central Plaza's multipurpose hall, visitors can often participate in science-themed events, such as building plastic bottle rockets. For younger children, the "Tsumiki Hiroba" (Building Block Square) offers 10,000 cypress wood blocks for play, while the "Ehon Hiroba" (Picture Book Square) provides a quiet space for reading. To help navigate the vast grounds, the "Land Train" runs frequently throughout the park.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. July and August are particularly vibrant, with lush greenery making outdoor activities highly active. During the bright daylight hours, you can fully enjoy the outdoor rides and equipment. Because the park is so large, we highly recommend using the Land Train for easier movement. Visiting during specific seasonal events or science workshops will provide a much deeper and more educational experience.
Beyond physical play, the park offers intellectual exploration. From science experiments in the multipurpose hall to tactile play with wooden blocks and the sensory experience of the steam locomotive, there is much to engage the five senses. The facility also features areas for camping and BBQ, allowing for a full recreational experience surrounded by nature. These activities encourage children to develop independence and a sense of wonder.
Located near Nishio City, the area offers beautiful views of Mikawa Bay and a rich natural environment. Because Aichi Kodomo no Kuni is nestled in such a scenic setting, visitors can enjoy a relaxing pace of life. The area is well-equipped for leisure, with nearby parking and seasonal facilities like ice skating rinks, making it easy to plan a complete day trip.
As the park is a vast natural area, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and active clothing. It is also essential to bring a hat and water to protect against the sun. Please be mindful of other visitors and follow park etiquette to ensure a safe and pleasant environment for all children.
