Agata Shrine is a highly revered shrine located in Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, known as the head shrine of the former Tajima Province. The shrine grounds are surrounded by a dense, sacred forest (shasorin) of towering cedar and cypress trees, where the power of nature and a sense of divinity coexist. The most iconic feature is the massive ancient cedar tree, which reaches approximately 35 meters in height. The sight of the shrine buildings harmonizing with this lush forest leaves a profound and lasting impression on every visitor.
According to local legend, the name "Agata" is derived from a myth where a deer appeared from Mount Agata carrying chestnuts in its mouth to teach humans the art of agriculture. The shrine also features the Imperial-style gate (Teshigomon), which is a designated local cultural property and serves as a testament to the area's historical significance. Furthermore, on October 17th every year, the shrine hosts the "Saagore" ritual as part of the Heshiwata-sai festival. This ceremony, which has been preserved for over 200 years, is celebrated for its unique and rare ritualistic traditions found nowhere else in Japan.
The primary attraction is the giant ancient cedar standing majestically within the sacred forest. Estimated to be around 400 years old, this massive tree radiates an overwhelming presence, appearing as one with the surrounding environment. The month of October is particularly special due to the Autumn Grand Festival. Visiting during this time allows you to feel the deep history of the shrine through its traditional rituals.
