Adventure World is a massive-scale theme park located in Shirama, Wakayama Prefecture, seamlessly integrating a zoo, an aquarium, and an amusement park. The park's core theme is "Interaction between Humans, Animals, and Nature." It is home to approximately 1,600 animals across 120 species, including land, sea, and air creatures. It is an immersive experience where visitors can feel the profound beauty of life through close encounters with diverse wildlife.
Originally opened in 1983 as "Nanki Shirahama World Safari," the facility later became known as "Adventure World." Over the decades, it has established a world-class reputation for the breeding and research of Giant Pandas. Beyond being a simple leisure facility, it serves as an educational space where visitors deepen their understanding of life through communication with animals.
The park features a wide variety of specialized exhibition areas. One of the most iconic attractions is the marine mammal performances featuring dolphins, sea lions, and whales. In the Safari Area, you can experience the thrill of observing animals in a semi-wild state from the safety of a moving "Kenya" vehicle. Additionally, visitors can explore dedicated areas for Giant Pandas, penguins, capybaras, and various bird species, each offering a unique glimpse into different ecosystems.
The park's charm changes with the seasons. During peak periods like Golden Week or summer vacations, the park often hosts special evening operations. During these times, you can enjoy the "Night LIVE Adventure," a spectacular show featuring dolphins and sea lions accompanied by stunning light and sound effects. Special seasonal events are also held during the best visiting months of spring and summer.
A defining characteristic of Adventure World is the close proximity to the animals. At the "Interaction Plaza," you can engage with animals such as Mara and ducks (some activities may require an additional fee). The dolphin and sea lion shows are highly popular, allowing you to witness the expressive movements and intelligence of the animals through their interaction with trained professionals. From safari tours to amusement park rides, a full day of diverse activities awaits.
The Shirama area, where Adventure World is located, is rich in tourism resources. Nearby, you can enjoy the beautiful coastline of Nanki Shirahama and numerous hot spring (onsen) facilities. The area around Tanabe Station and the famous "Tore Tore Market" are also popular stops, where visitors often enjoy fresh local seafood after their adventure at the park.
