The Adatara Mountain Ropeway connects the base of Mt. Adatara in Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima, to its summit via a 1,500m journey. By riding the high-speed gondola, the "Adatara Express," you can reach the 1,350m elevation of Mt. Yakushi in approximately 10 minutes. A major highlight is the 180cm tall "A" sculpture installed in 2024, which has become a popular photo spot for visitors. Additionally, the Fuji Q Rest House offers unique local treats, such as churros shaped like the characters "A" and "Take," adding a fun culinary element to your trip.
Mt. Adatara is the primary peak of the Adatara Mountain Range and has long been celebrated for its rich natural environment. The installation of the ropeway has made the high-altitude areas easily accessible to beginners and families, allowing more people to enjoy the mountain's beauty without the strenuous climb. The area is carefully managed to preserve its natural environment while providing seasonal beauty for all visitors.
The greatest draw is the panoramic view from the gondola. As you ascend, you can see the cityscape of Nihonmatsu and Fukushima City below, with distant views of mountains like Azuma-Kofuji and the Zao Mountain Range. Upon reaching the summit station, a short 5-minute walk leads you to the Yakushidake Panorama Park, where you can enjoy sweeping views of Mt. Adatara. The "A" sculpture is the perfect spot for a memorable souvenir photo.
The ropeway typically operates from mid-April to early November. From spring to summer, visitors can enjoy lush greenery and vibrant seasonal flowers under clear blue skies. In autumn, the mountainside transforms into a stunning display of colorful foliage. From early August to late September, the "Adatara Illumination" event takes place, offering a magical experience of light and stars at night. Please note the operating hours: the last departure from the base station is 15:50, and the last from the summit is 16:20 (standard season). Schedules may change due to weather or sunset.
Beyond the scenic gondola ride, walking around the summit is the primary activity. The path to the Yakushidake Panorama Park is gentle and suitable for beginners and families. For a unique local experience, try the limited-edition churros at the Fuji Q Rest House. For those looking for more adventure, the area offers various hiking levels, ranging from easy paths near the ropeway station to more advanced mountain climbing routes.
The surrounding area features hot spring facilities like "Okutake no Yu" and mountain bases such as "Kurogane Koya." The area is also close to various ski resorts and local sightseeing spots in Nihonmatsu, making it a versatile destination for seasonal leisure.
As the temperature at the summit is significantly lower than at the base, please bring appropriate clothing. Warm layers are highly recommended, especially during spring and autumn. Sturdy walking shoes are also recommended for exploring the summit area.
