Adashino Nenbutsu-ji is a historic temple located in the deep reaches of Sagano, Kyoto. Every year, during the last Saturday and Sunday of August, the temple hosts the "Sen-to Kuyo" (Thousand Lamp Offering). As thousands of candles are lit, they illuminate the 8,000 stone Buddhas and pagodas scattered throughout the grounds, creating a scene of profound tranquility that feels worlds away from daily life. This ritual, dedicated to honoring the souls of the departed, creates an incredibly emotional and spiritual landscape where light and nature exist in perfect harmony.
The name "Adashino" is rooted in a history of ancient funerary practices. This area became a place where stone Buddhas were erected to mourn those who passed away, eventually developing into the Nenbutsu-ji temple we know today. The spirit of honoring those whose names have been lost to time is deeply embedded in this land. The Sen-to Kuyo ceremony continues to preserve this sacred tradition, serving as a vital link between the historical past and the present day.
The greatest highlight is the sight of thousands of flickering candles as night falls. Seeing the mass of stone Buddhas enveloped in a soft, warm glow creates a sense of deep spirituality and silence. Visitors can also encounter various Buddhist teachings, such as the "Ten Precepts of the Secular World," displayed throughout the grounds. The surrounding bamboo groves also add a striking aesthetic layer to the temple's atmosphere.
The Sen-to Kuyo is held only during the last Saturday and Sunday of August. The event typically runs from 17:30 to 20:30. This is the ideal time to visit, as the daytime heat begins to subside and the darkness allows the candlelight to shine most beautifully. The experience is centered around a night visit, capturing the unique, fleeting atmosphere of late summer.
During the Sen-to Kuyo period, visitors can obtain special Goshuin (temple stamps) that are only available during this event. Offering incense to honor the departed is also a significant part of the ritual. Additionally, nearby streets may host events like the "Atago Kodo Kaido Akari," making a stroll through the surrounding area a unique seasonal experience.
Adashino Nenbutsu-ji is situated slightly away from the main bustle of Arashiyama, offering a more peaceful atmosphere. The area is surrounded by beautiful Sagano landscapes and famous bamboo groves. For smooth travel, consider planning your route from the Arashiyama area. If you are driving, parking is available at nearby locations such as the "Matsuyama Garage Parking" or the "Imai Parking," which is about a 5-minute walk from the temple.
As this is an outdoor evening event, the paths can be dark. It is highly recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes. Since it is a summer night, please prepare for the heat and consider bringing insect repellent. To maintain the sacred atmosphere, please refrain from loud conversations and respect the silence of the temple grounds.
